Athlete A (2020)

Follow the Indianapolis Star reporters that broke the story about USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar's abuse and hear from gymnasts.

“Athlete A” was a moniker given to the anonymous athlete who first reported Larry Nassar, the Olympic doctor convicted of multiple sex crimes, to U.S.A. Gymnastics. That gymnast, who has since revealed her identity, is Maggie Nichols, one of the brave subjects in Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk’s latest documentary (out now on Netflix), about the organization’s long history of abuse and cover-ups. Though it focuses on one main perpetrator, the film adeptly juggles various moving parts, such as the ruthless nature of training and the aftermath of speaking out. - From the NY TImes review

I just caught up with this documentary on Netflix (in the US) today. It's the second one about this scandal I've watched recently, and every bit as infuriating as the first one I saw. I appreciated that in this one, there was some focus on the emotional and physical abuse of the coaches and other people involved in the organization and the Olympics, and as someone trained in journalism, I always appreciate seeing some good reporting.

I watched this last week. I hadn't followed the story too closely when it was in the news during the sentencing hearing, so though I was aware that USAG was complicit, I hadn't really known the details of just how thoroughly rotten the whole organization was.
