Hubie Halloween (2020)
October 11, 2020 3:36 PM - Subscribe

Despite his devotion to his hometown of Salem, (and its Halloween celebration), Hubie Dubois is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike. But this year, something is going bump in the night, and it's up to Hubie to save Halloween.

Streaming on Netflix.

So I thought this was pretty great. Of course I like Adam Sandler and even like Grown Ups 2, so I might not be the best person to get a recommendation from.

The nice thing is that Hubie always does the right thing. He is obviously terrified like ninety percent of the time, but he still tries to be a good person. I mean you get all off the juvenile Sandler comedy, but at the end of the day the movie is really incredibly kind hearted.

I loved this movie! I have a huge soft spot for early Adam Sandler movies, though I didn't keep up with watching them after the first few in the 90s, so I've missed most of them. Goofy Halloween movies are the best, and this is going to join Ernest Scared Stupid in my annual lineup of fun Halloween viewings.

Living in Salem, obligatory "most of that was not filmed in Salem!" comment (a lot of Danvers & Marblehead standing in for Salem). I was hoping to see a little more of our cute little city in the movie.

They did film the apple bobbing scene in Salem. I know because I was one of say 2 dozen vendors they hired to build up a fake Halloween event in the middle of June. They went all out - installing lighting (that Salem still uses!), rigging up our booths for power, placing fake autumnal leaves and branches all over the place, and even setting off a bunch of fireworks...

...none of which was used in the movie.

Still, I made 600 bucks for staing around reading a Budd Hopkins paperback. I also swiped a weight which is actually really nice (I call it my Sandman Sandbag), so it was worth it. Sandler stopped by all the vendors to say hi, which was nice.

Doh. A local reporter got fired for her cameo in the movie. One of the better running gags, too!

Like okay you "violated your contract", but is it really a fireable offense? I mean is there more to this story or are her bosses just monstrous assholes?

My coworker drunkenly sent me screenshots of this tonight without context. When I said, “Whuh?,” she just replied, “hubie halloween.”

The Boston Channel 7 owners are notorious jerks (they're the ones who, back when they were the NBC affiliate, decided to put on local news rather than Jay Leno's 10pm corpsefest - this is also why they are not the NBC station anymore) so I have no doubt that they would fire someone over fine print.
