An aging Pat Garrett is hired as a lawman on behalf of a group of wealthy New Mexico cattle barons--his sole purpose being to bring down his old friend Billy the Kid.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is a 1973 American revisionist western drama film directed by Sam Peckinpah, written by Rudy Wurlitzer, and starring James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, Richard Jaeckel, Katy Jurado, Chill Wills, Barry Sullivan, Jason Robards and Bob Dylan. The film is about an aging Pat Garrett (Coburn), hired as a lawman by a group of wealthy New Mexico cattle barons to bring down his old friend Billy the Kid (wiki)

This movie is amazing, and I watch it again and again and again. It was like the 20th time when I realized that George Lucas had stolen Billy's costume for Han Solo. If you've never seen it, please do. Oh, and Bob Dylan is something to see in this one.

The restored (almost director's) cut is superb, though I don't quite know why Dylan is in the movie. His character really doesn't serve a coherent purpose. Nonetheless, I'd love to see this available in a high-def format.

The original theatrical cut sucked.

Some production notes: A chunk of the film had to be re-shot after debris in the camera scratched up the negative during shooting. When Peckinpah saw the results he allegedly whipped his dick out and pissed on the screen.

Wurlitzer's next project would be Ridley Scott's aborted version of Dune.

Stories differ, but I think it's almost certain that it was Kris who got Sam sold on including Bob. Now that's a sentence! Anyway, Yeah, Alias is a weird character, but having him read can labels was inspired, and I gotta say, I do love the soundtrack.

Kris also showed up in another Peckinpah movie: Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia. I should do that one next.

Also, Kris was kinda close to Rita Coolidge, who is the woman Billy is with at the end of the film.
