Live Stream: Semifinal 2 (2021 Eurovision Song Contest)
May 20, 2021 6:20 AM - Subscribe

Eurovision Week continues in Rotterdam, and we move along to Semifinal 2. Semifinal 1 was full of surprises, and this one will undoubtedly have a few twists of its own. Semifinal 2 begins Thursday May 20th (today!), at 2100 CEST / 3:00pm EDT. Come on in to chat about the second round of performances and to express all your Eurovision-related feelings.

HOW TO WATCH LIVE:

Viewers outside of Australia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, United States and the United Kingdom can watch via the official livestream for Semifinal 2 from the Eurovision YouTube Channel.

For those of us unlucky enough to be geoblocked, and without an official national broadcaster, you've got several options available to you: this thread on the Eurovision subreddit goes into further details, but the Swedish National Broadcaster (SVT)’s official stream is always a fairly reliable option. American viewers can finally watch it live via Peacock, NBC’s online streaming channel (free account required).

Can't watch this live, unfortunately, but looking forward to checking back in after I get caught up. And then enjoying the finals on Saturday live!

Just a PSA for US viewers - I was able to watch the Peacock stream for the first semi-final a couple hours after it aired, so you should still be able to watch this via Peacock even if you can't watch live.

How is the Peacock stream? Is there any extra commentary, or is it more or less the same as what's on Eurovision's own YouTube channel?
posted by May Kasahara at 11:55 AM on May 20, 2021

Peacock - No commentary, ad-free, plays nice with Chromecast. I used it for the first Semi, am using it again now!

I feel like I missed something with the opening act here. It was good, but I feel like I should have recognized it.

One of my favorite aspects of Eurovision singing is when English words are pronounced like the equivalent word in the singer’s language. The Sammarinese singer’s “adrenaleeen” is a great example.

Oh. San Marino was a very good choice to open the Semi.

I'd like to see Estonia again with a more interesting song.

Yeah. Estonia's talented, but if you held a gun to my head thirty seconds after this song and asked me to describe it, I'd tell you to just go ahead and shoot.

So I wasn't imagining things; that really was Flo Rida as part of San Marino's performance.

Estonia - good singer, good staging, will forget by Song 3.
posted by PearlRose at 12:17 PM on May 20, 2021

San Marino had me giggling at how weird it sounded, but it's the most catchy so far for sure. I couldn't tell you anything about Estonia already.

Czechia is fun. He sounds a bit weak, but he’s got charisma to spare, though.
posted by PearlRose at 12:20 PM on May 20, 2021

Czech Republic's song was slightly better than Estonia's, but only slightly.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:20 PM on May 20, 2021

I'll say. He's charming.
posted by JanetLand at 12:20 PM on May 20, 2021

I got the slightly uncomfortable feeling during Benny Cristo’s song that the Czech Republic has sent one of those songs that are like a regular pop song, but actually a Christian praise song disguised as a pop song.
posted by Kattullus at 12:20 PM on May 20, 2021 [1 favorite]

Okay, so Greece is one of those acts that's more about the gimmick than the song.

Those are local weather report levels of special effects in Greece’s stageshow.
posted by Kattullus at 12:23 PM on May 20, 2021

Greece's song is pretty decent on its own, but yeah, that staging is something else. Love the color scheme, and wondering how it looks live.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:24 PM on May 20, 2021

Greece's staging is hella fun. It's fantastic. She looks a bit nervous, though.

Austria's got something to say about that, it seems.

I suspect Austria’s is a gay love song disguised as a Christian praise song

Austria is going for the heartfelt minimalistic approach.

Poland has kind of a retro-80s vibe that I appreciate, but I don't know...it's no erotic butter-churning like they sent a few years back.

Eurovision 2021: Men Dancing in White Edition

Poland sounds like some 80:s music maybe? Seems familiar.

Poland is going for a Swedish vibe, but without ...the Swedish talent.

Pyro is not gonna help this song, guys.

One thing I love about Eurovision is that through them, the 80s will never die.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:31 PM on May 20, 2021 [3 favorites]

And it struck me that I've been doing theatre too long, because one of the things preoccupying me about Poland is who takes care of those little hand lights in between performances. Somewhere backstage there's a person whose entire job is to take those lights off the dancers and pack them away for the night, then make sure they're ready for Saturday (if they go through).

Did Moldova sound out of breath to anyone else?
posted by gemmy at 12:39 PM on May 20, 2021

I dunno. It's not perfect, but I like Moldova's entry. And speaking of the 80s, there's at least three different decades' worth of influences (which you might not ordinarily expect to see together) in that performance.

It must’ve been so weird for the Daði and Gagnamagnið (his band) to watch their performance on a screen. Two years of work and you sit in a hotel room and watch yourself compete.

Serbia: Good singing, decent song -- the choreography seems off to me, a bit.

Georgia, another competent-enough singer with a so-so song. I get the impression he's not comfortable singing in English.

He's got an excellent beard, though, according to the spouse. (Who I'm forcing to watch with me today.)
posted by PearlRose at 12:51 PM on May 20, 2021 [2 favorites]

There’s nothing like Eurovision for incredible changes in energy, going from the Serbian song to the Georgian feels like biting into a chili, and then licking a stamp.

Albania gets instant points from me for not singing in English. Still wish they hadn't changed that rule..
posted by mirthe at 12:54 PM on May 20, 2021 [2 favorites]

I like Albania far more than I expected to. She's an excellent performer, but I'm afraid it's going to be overlooked amongst all the other solo female artists this year.
posted by PearlRose at 12:56 PM on May 20, 2021

Albania's song is solid, but their staging is a bit plain. I think that song deserves a touch more extravagance.

Okay, I'm digging Portugal. It's nice and distinctive and sounds like an actual song. It's got kind of a nice blues-y thing going on.

Portugal is different. Beatles-inspired and bluesy with a good singer. Not bad.

Portugal’s song is nice. Which is often their thing in Eurovision. And as far as having a “Eurovision thing”, that’s a pretty good one.

Portugal is another one where seeing it live has really endeared it to me. Good vocals and incredible staging. It's also very different from anything else I've seen tonight.

The Swedish commentator said that the Portuguese song sounded like the background music in a 70s movie where Dustin Hoffman is being forced to choose between the girl he loves and the Vietnam war. I... can see it!

I wasn't crazy about Bulgaria's song, but I've got to give it respect for not being all glitzy and flashy and pyrotechnical.

I got Bulgaria mixed up with Latvia. Oooof.

Excellent staging, but I don't like the song. At all. It's just not for me. She's very sincere and giving it her all. It's good.

Switzerland did very well during their last appearance. They really, really want a win.

This entry is extremely good.

I like the Swiss song, which is a strange sentence to write, and I also like that the choreographer clearly sat down and thought hard about what moves to teach a man who absolutely can’t dance.

That Swiss song was great and well performed. It's so lovely and so weird to then have Denmark go all in on 80s glam pop that sounds like what Eurovision was like when I was a kid. Not a fan of the song so much, but I appreciate it.

Day late, dollar short and all that, but I'm glad Iceland, San Marino and Bulgaria made it through. I felt like this semifinal was a little weaker field, which is why I don't have any strong feelings of resentment about any of the songs that didn't make the cut. (Still mad Norway made it through above about 3 of the semi final 1 also rans. I think that entry coasted on its placement immediately after El Diablo - people just liked the heaven-hell juxtaposition and the admittedly hilarious giant angel wings!)

Now off to shop for finals snacks!
