Live Stream: Semifinal 2 (2021 Eurovision Song Contest)
May 20, 2021 6:20 AM - Subscribe

Eurovision Week continues in Rotterdam, and we move along to Semifinal 2. Semifinal 1 was full of surprises, and this one will undoubtedly have a few twists of its own. Semifinal 2 begins Thursday May 20th (today!), at 2100 CEST / 3:00pm EDT. Come on in to chat about the second round of performances and to express all your Eurovision-related feelings.

HOW TO WATCH LIVE:

Viewers outside of Australia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, United States and the United Kingdom can watch via the official livestream for Semifinal 2 from the Eurovision YouTube Channel.

For those of us unlucky enough to be geoblocked, and without an official national broadcaster, you've got several options available to you: this thread on the Eurovision subreddit goes into further details, but the Swedish National Broadcaster (SVT)’s official stream is always a fairly reliable option. American viewers can finally watch it live via Peacock, NBC’s online streaming channel (free account required).

Can't watch this live, unfortunately, but looking forward to checking back in after I get caught up. And then enjoying the finals on Saturday live!

Just a PSA for US viewers - I was able to watch the Peacock stream for the first semi-final a couple hours after it aired, so you should still be able to watch this via Peacock even if you can't watch live.

How is the Peacock stream? Is there any extra commentary, or is it more or less the same as what's on Eurovision's own YouTube channel?
posted by May Kasahara at 11:55 AM on May 20

Peacock - No commentary, ad-free, plays nice with Chromecast. I used it for the first Semi, am using it again now!

I feel like I missed something with the opening act here. It was good, but I feel like I should have recognized it.
posted by PearlRose at 12:08 PM on May 20

One of my favorite aspects of Eurovision singing is when English words are pronounced like the equivalent word in the singer’s language. The Sammarinese singer’s “adrenaleeen” is a great example.
posted by Kattullus at 12:11 PM on May 20

Oh. San Marino was a very good choice to open the Semi.
posted by PearlRose at 12:12 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

I'd like to see Estonia again with a more interesting song.
posted by JanetLand at 12:14 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Yeah. Estonia's talented, but if you held a gun to my head thirty seconds after this song and asked me to describe it, I'd tell you to just go ahead and shoot.
posted by Mr. Bad Example at 12:15 PM on May 20 [3 favorites]

So I wasn't imagining things; that really was Flo Rida as part of San Marino's performance.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:16 PM on May 20 [3 favorites]

Estonia - good singer, good staging, will forget by Song 3.
posted by PearlRose at 12:17 PM on May 20

San Marino had me giggling at how weird it sounded, but it's the most catchy so far for sure. I couldn't tell you anything about Estonia already.
posted by gemmy at 12:17 PM on May 20

Czechia is fun. He sounds a bit weak, but he’s got charisma to spare, though.
posted by PearlRose at 12:20 PM on May 20

Czech Republic's song was slightly better than Estonia's, but only slightly.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:20 PM on May 20

I'll say. He's charming.
posted by JanetLand at 12:20 PM on May 20

I got the slightly uncomfortable feeling during Benny Cristo’s song that the Czech Republic has sent one of those songs that are like a regular pop song, but actually a Christian praise song disguised as a pop song.
posted by Kattullus at 12:20 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Okay, so Greece is one of those acts that's more about the gimmick than the song.
posted by Mr. Bad Example at 12:22 PM on May 20

Bond girl outfit!
posted by JanetLand at 12:22 PM on May 20

Hey, Greece's outfit is similar to what I wear grocery shopping.
posted by mirthe at 12:23 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

Those are local weather report levels of special effects in Greece’s stageshow.
posted by Kattullus at 12:23 PM on May 20

Greece's song is pretty decent on its own, but yeah, that staging is something else. Love the color scheme, and wondering how it looks live.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:24 PM on May 20

Greece's staging is hella fun. It's fantastic. She looks a bit nervous, though.
posted by PearlRose at 12:25 PM on May 20

actually a Christian praise song disguised as a pop song.

Austria's got something to say about that, it seems.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:26 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

I suspect Austria’s is a gay love song disguised as a Christian praise song
posted by Kattullus at 12:27 PM on May 20 [3 favorites]

Austria is going for the heartfelt minimalistic approach.
posted by PearlRose at 12:28 PM on May 20

Poland has kind of a retro-80s vibe that I appreciate, but I don't know...it's no erotic butter-churning like they sent a few years back.
posted by Mr. Bad Example at 12:29 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Eurovision 2021: Men Dancing in White Edition

Poland sounds like some 80:s music maybe? Seems familiar.
posted by gemmy at 12:30 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Poland is going for a Swedish vibe, but without ...the Swedish talent.
posted by PearlRose at 12:31 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Pyro is not gonna help this song, guys.
posted by JanetLand at 12:31 PM on May 20

One thing I love about Eurovision is that through them, the 80s will never die.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:31 PM on May 20 [3 favorites]

And it struck me that I've been doing theatre too long, because one of the things preoccupying me about Poland is who takes care of those little hand lights in between performances. Somewhere backstage there's a person whose entire job is to take those lights off the dancers and pack them away for the night, then make sure they're ready for Saturday (if they go through).

Poland is going for a Swedish vibe

I think the composers were mostly Swedish, so yea.
posted by gemmy at 12:32 PM on May 20

This is weirdly conventional for Moldova.
posted by Mr. Bad Example at 12:37 PM on May 20

I think the composers were mostly Swedish, so yea.

Sweden contributes to a lot of entries, I'm discovering.
posted by PearlRose at 12:37 PM on May 20

Ow. Moldova. I adore you. You're my favorite underdogs. But this is very not good.
posted by PearlRose at 12:38 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Every year Moldova don’t send epic sax guy is a year wasted, if you ask me
posted by Kattullus at 12:38 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Moldova, great song, poorly performed.
posted by JanetLand at 12:38 PM on May 20

Did Moldova sound out of breath to anyone else?
posted by gemmy at 12:39 PM on May 20

I dunno. It's not perfect, but I like Moldova's entry. And speaking of the 80s, there's at least three different decades' worth of influences (which you might not ordinarily expect to see together) in that performance.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:39 PM on May 20

Out of breath and flat.

Love you, Iceland!

Oh, Iceland. I love you and this song too. I'm so sad for them that they can't do it live.

Oh. Iceland. My heart.

This is really good. The rehearsal footage doesn't take away from it at all.

It must’ve been so weird for the Daði and Gagnamagnið (his band) to watch their performance on a screen. Two years of work and you sit in a hotel room and watch yourself compete.

I have a friend who calls Serbia's type of song/performance "Wiggle Whiplash."
posted by JanetLand at 12:47 PM on May 20 [3 favorites]

I liked Serbia, hope they makes it to the Final.
posted by gemmy at 12:47 PM on May 20

Serbia: Good singing, decent song -- the choreography seems off to me, a bit.
posted by PearlRose at 12:47 PM on May 20

Georgia, another competent-enough singer with a so-so song. I get the impression he's not comfortable singing in English.

He's got an excellent beard, though, according to the spouse. (Who I'm forcing to watch with me today.)
posted by PearlRose at 12:51 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

There’s nothing like Eurovision for incredible changes in energy, going from the Serbian song to the Georgian feels like biting into a chili, and then licking a stamp.
posted by Kattullus at 12:51 PM on May 20 [5 favorites]

Albania gets instant points from me for not singing in English. Still wish they hadn't changed that rule..
posted by mirthe at 12:54 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

I like Albania far more than I expected to. She's an excellent performer, but I'm afraid it's going to be overlooked amongst all the other solo female artists this year.
posted by PearlRose at 12:56 PM on May 20

Albania's song is solid, but their staging is a bit plain. I think that song deserves a touch more extravagance.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:56 PM on May 20 [3 favorites]

Okay, I'm digging Portugal. It's nice and distinctive and sounds like an actual song. It's got kind of a nice blues-y thing going on.
posted by Mr. Bad Example at 12:57 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

Portugal is different. Beatles-inspired and bluesy with a good singer. Not bad.
posted by gemmy at 12:58 PM on May 20 [3 favorites]

Portugal’s song is nice. Which is often their thing in Eurovision. And as far as having a “Eurovision thing”, that’s a pretty good one.
posted by Kattullus at 12:58 PM on May 20

Portugal is another one where seeing it live has really endeared it to me. Good vocals and incredible staging. It's also very different from anything else I've seen tonight.
posted by PearlRose at 12:59 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

I'm on Team Portugal, definitely. A lovely hypnotic song, great singer.
posted by JanetLand at 1:00 PM on May 20

The Swedish commentator said that the Portuguese song sounded like the background music in a 70s movie where Dustin Hoffman is being forced to choose between the girl he loves and the Vietnam war. I... can see it!
posted by gemmy at 1:01 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

I wasn't crazy about Bulgaria's song, but I've got to give it respect for not being all glitzy and flashy and pyrotechnical.
posted by Mr. Bad Example at 1:06 PM on May 20

I got Bulgaria mixed up with Latvia. Oooof.

Excellent staging, but I don't like the song. At all. It's just not for me. She's very sincere and giving it her all. It's good.

Finland has such a weird idea about what works in Eurovision, which I love.
posted by Kattullus at 1:07 PM on May 20 [4 favorites]

Alright Finland! Most metal bands per capita indeed.
posted by gemmy at 1:08 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

Nu-metal is alive and well in Finland, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.
posted by May Kasahara at 1:09 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

In sudden genre shifts, we now have Finland.

It's like if Linkin Park and Korn went to Finland
and made a Eurovision-focused metal song.

I keep expecting Latvia to turn around and report to Ming the Merciless.
posted by Mr. Bad Example at 1:11 PM on May 20

I like Latvia’s back up singers, not enough people dress like old timey library lamps.
posted by Kattullus at 1:11 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Latvia... this isn't the way to get to the Final again I'm sorry. I appreciate the weirdness, but no...
posted by gemmy at 1:12 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Oh! Latvia. She tried to get on stage nine times. Nine! I admire her perseverance, and her staging is great. She is here for Eurovision, full stop. Her vocals are not great.

Switzerland did very well during their last appearance. They really, really want a win.

This entry is extremely good.
posted by PearlRose at 1:17 PM on May 20

I like the Swiss song, which is a strange sentence to write, and I also like that the choreographer clearly sat down and thought hard about what moves to teach a man who absolutely can’t dance.
posted by Kattullus at 1:18 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

Beautiful voice.

Oh god, Denmark has sent Earring Magic Ken.

Denmark's entry sounds like an original video anime ending theme from 1986 and I am here for it.
posted by May Kasahara at 1:21 PM on May 20 [2 favorites]

Denmark has the kind of song that I absolutely love but that doesn't usually do well.
posted by JanetLand at 1:21 PM on May 20

Denmark is absurd. It is ridiculous and I am here for it.
posted by PearlRose at 1:21 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

By contrast, Denmark’s choreographer did not think at all about what moves to teach a man who absolutely can’t dance.
posted by Kattullus at 1:21 PM on May 20 [4 favorites]

That Swiss song was great and well performed. It's so lovely and so weird to then have Denmark go all in on 80s glam pop that sounds like what Eurovision was like when I was a kid. Not a fan of the song so much, but I appreciate it.
posted by gemmy at 1:22 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

See, this is the kind of lighthearted poppy song we NEED after a year like 2020.

Seeing all the winners talk about how they still love Eurovision, 20, 30, 40 years later is incredible. The fact that they see it as a genuinely good thing makes me feel like it's okay for me to love it, too.

The French dream of winning with a proper “chanson”. This year, they might well do it. I like it a lot, at least, but I like French chanson.
posted by Kattullus at 1:52 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

I'm just glad to see that the UK has sent a decent song this year. We--I'm still getting used to thinking of it as "we"--won't win, of course, but it should be a fairly decent showing this time around.
posted by Mr. Bad Example at 1:54 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

I legit adore the French and UK entries this year.
posted by PearlRose at 1:55 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Of the Big 5, France is definitely my favorite, but the UK has a better song than they have had in a long while.

Oh man, I'm so glad Portugal and Iceland made it. This breaks my streak of voting for acts that never win.

I'm pretty pleased with the qualifications from this round. Several acts improved considerably for me with the live performances, and I'm pleased those made it through.
posted by PearlRose at 2:07 PM on May 20 [1 favorite]

Day late, dollar short and all that, but I'm glad Iceland, San Marino and Bulgaria made it through. I felt like this semifinal was a little weaker field, which is why I don't have any strong feelings of resentment about any of the songs that didn't make the cut. (Still mad Norway made it through above about 3 of the semi final 1 also rans. I think that entry coasted on its placement immediately after El Diablo - people just liked the heaven-hell juxtaposition and the admittedly hilarious giant angel wings!)

Now off to shop for finals snacks!
