Galavant: Pilot/Joust Friends
January 6, 2015 2:53 PM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

A fairytale musical comedy from the writer of Tangled, Dan Fogelman, with songs by more Disney veterans, composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater, Galavant tells the story of the dashing namesake hero on a quest to win back his former lover Madalena, who left him for the evil King Richard. Bawdy jokes and anachronistic references follow.

It's different, I guess. I'm not sure if I dislike it but it certainly didn't wow me. I know they've not been fleshed out yet but none of the main characters seem likeable. And the poor squire. *SMH* I feel sorry for him.

I did guffaw at the bit about Princess Elizabetta's weight:

Knight: She's bit chunky for my tastes.

King: What?! She's a hundred pounds soaking wet.

Bodyguard: I like my girls really skinny, like unhealthy skinny.

Yeah, same here. Like, we had one "establishing" episode and then sort of this "obligatory jousting" episode, and now maybe it'll get better? I mean, it's good, but it's not good yet.

I liked the pilot, but why they went instantly into an obvious filler episode* is beyond me. The concept as is is cool, so why waste time on that? But that said, I deeply enjoy the snarky songs, particularly "You're Not The Worst Thing Ever." What a "love" ballad.

* also nobody ever, ever likes "yo mama" jokes. Poor John Stamos.

I do wonder how Madalena managed to not be horrible with Galavant for so long. She's the kind of woman that if she ever runs off with Galavant again, fifteen minutes later will be bitching to him that the King gave her all these jewels and why are you taking me to a hovel? And five minutes later, Gal would bring her back.

I think they spent too much time being amorous to really get to know each other.

I did like how they made musical promos for all the ABC shows, that was fun.

She didn't know there was anything more to aspire to than being the prettiest girl in the village and the great warrior's paramour. Once she saw there was more, she wanted more.

I still have the Psych musical episode saved in my Tivo, so, I knew I'd be watching this for Tim Omundson no matter what, but I thought it was pretty fun overall.

Those got on my nerves to no end, they really soured me on the song; it went from catchy to annoying by the umpteenth time I was trying to fast-forward through them. The pilot was still up for free on iTunes today, will have to see if watching it uninterrupted will turn me back on to the music.

Toonami kept playing a promo for the Rick & Morty DVD every commercial break on Saturday so I think I built up a tolerance to jokes that start out funny, get tedious, then go on long enough to get funny again.

About half of me thought this was silly and not good, but the other half really loved it because I watched Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Monty Python and the Holy Grail about 500 times as a child. Also, I frankly respect ABC for taking a risk and committing to this ridiculous premise.

There were definitely bits that had me cringing or rolling my eyes, but I laughed a lot at that joust, which was executed with perfect comic timing and was a nice subversion of the training marathon fixing everything trope. I also really appreciate the color blind casting.

I liked these first two episodes overall. The songs were funny and catchy and the whole thing was goofy, and I'm looking forward to the next few episodes and want to see where the story goes.

I really loved how they made all the ABC promos be musical as well.

Can I be that guy for a moment and bitch about how dishonest the advertising for this show was? For weeks leading up to it, they heavily marketed it as a show "for the whole family," and my kids got so excited about it. Ten minutes in, I realized that it's wildly inappropriate for my two younger ones. Massive disappointment all around when I had to be the bad guy and say "sorry, guys, we can't watch this after all" after the first episode.

What I saw of it was pretty good, and I bet I'd enjoy it myself, but the marketing was so dishonest, it just totally pissed me off.

jbickers, I didn't see the promos but I did guess a musical on ABC would be aimed at the +kids market and was surprised at some of the lines.

I think we should start a campaign to re-name "family-friendly" to "kid-friendly." The latter is more accurate and doesn't erroneously suggest that only people with young children constitute a family. That shit has bugged me for eons.

Yeah, I'd tend to agree it wasn't very kid-friendly. A lot of the jokes and songs were sexual in nature, but I suppose ABC assumed that'd fly over the heads of anyone below a teenager?

The "small brown body" comment in ep 2 was really surprising.

Seconded. Or even better: rank the ages of what's appropriate, like "NC-17" or something :) Or in the case of TV: "not for people below puberty" or something.

'Screaming like a castrated hyena' is my new favorite phrase.

So I only watched about 10 mins of the pilot, and was totally turned off by the way his life is totally ruined entirely because his girlfriend is such a slut, how she starts off as a victim but it turns out she really wants it, because she's so shallow she'd rather dump Nice Guy Galavant for a rich, rapey jerk than be rescued. And then our real heroine turns out to be such a helpless damsel in distress that all she can do is hide in the basement while her home and kingdom are raided. Came here to find out, it me or is this sexist as hell? Does it get better? I really wanted to like this.

It's not just you, and sadly, I don't think it does get any better. (I'm still watching, out of forlorn devotion to Omundson.). The occasional funny moments are outweighed by the many many jokes that fall flat, mostly the humor is just so broad and stereotypical that I can't figure out what target audience the writers were going for. It's too dumb for grownups and too inappropriate for kids.
