Jade War

The second book in the Green Bone Saga, continuing the story of the Kaul siblings who run the No Peak clan and who are battling for survival against their rival the Mountain. Everyone is older, some are thrown into new situations in foreign countries, and the battles occasionally get very personal.

This one is more ambitious and more expansive than Jade City, exploring more of the world, more of the issues, and more of the growing problems in Kekon. Which also makes the book more diffuse; it lacks the focus of the great Clan War of the first book. However, the book doesn't lack for action or interest, and it's worth following for the characters alone. That's saying something when the protagonists are sometimes awful; the Green Bone Saga doesn't flinch from the fact that they are criminals and killers. (One does something so unforgivably awful in this book that I completely despise him now, and another tacitly condones his action.)

Yeah, I was fascinated with how Fonda Lee *went there* - and it's completely in character and yet so horrible that it's hard to realize that this is a person you've been following along for years, probably subconsciously rooting for them.
