NO NOT VAN

I am convinced the blackmailer is Jeff.

The glitter clue was so heavily hinted at that we groaned when it wasn't resolved within the episode.

I agree, my money is on Jeff. Waiting for that glitter to be found on the floor of the shower.

So upset about Van!

I am so much more invested in the 1996 part of the story but still loving it and Melanie Lynskey is just the best.

With Jackie reading Shauna's journal was devastating - I hope things really escalate for the 3 episodes left in the season. Worried that it will be cancelled before we get to see how everything shakes out

Good news: it's been renewed for a second season!

I think the actress playing Van (Liv Hewson) should be cast in a Shiv Logan/Succession origin story.

Ahh she would be so good as a young Shiv! I like how around each other the adult characters just relax into their bickering shared friendship selves. They’re always slightly tense around other people - polished or nice - watchful. But together, they felt casual and unmasked.

Lottie's magic bone did not protect Van

If you've got a hankering for more of the actress who plays Van, she was a primary cast member on Santa Clarita Diet, and she was deeply hilarious on that show.

IIRC, Taissa woke up holding Lottie's bone of protection with her up in the tree.

Does anyone else think Coach is probably gay? It would be a pretty simple explanation for why a physically fit thirty-ish male thought he might get laid often enough over a few days in San Francisco that he might need a few dozen condoms...

I predict Shauna will find glitter in her bed and will (mistakenly) think Jeff is the blackmailer, but it'll turn out to actually be Adam (who might actually be Javi) or vice versa.

Gay makes way more sense than creeper - the coach feels like a good person and the Misty twist is really hard to take. If he isn’t secretly in love with her, I think he’s painfully aware that she’s unhinged and as a recent amputee, he’s reliant on her. I think he’ll be the first to recognise how dangerous she is and get murdered by her in some way.

Yeah I think there's definitely more than meets the eye with both coaches - Travis and Javi's dad had a weird moment with his wife/their mom in Episode 1 I think, and iirc he missed the practice where Tai took out Allie because of a family issue.

I thought they were going to Seattle? Not that it makes a big difference now.

..and yeah I totally agree with dorothyisunderwood, I think Coach Ben's days are numbered and I fully expect Misty to be very involved with that.

yeah Ben seems 100% good and wholesome, and fully aware of Misty's weird crush on him. his days are indeed, probably numbered...

I'm also curious if others make it back alive besides the ones who's lives we are seeing in the current day/adult version.

It's a grim reality of serialized television: the more complex the effects/makeup needed to render someone's injuries, the less likely they are to survive. Maybe it's budgeting/time, maybe actors just hate that shit, maybe the injury foretells the death. But it's often the case. A horribly injured character cannot do as much but costs more to use. They never keep them around. They won't keep paying to CGI out Coach's leg for very long.

Unless she heals up weirdly well or they come up with a low effort way to hide that side of her face, I don't think Van is long for this world either, for the same reasons.

I absolutely read his "confession" to Misty as a way to keep her happy and quiet, not as his true feelings.

A fascinating theory from the excellent Autostraddle recaps (this is the most recent episode I've watched, so no intentional spoilers here) is that Shauna will find glitter in the laundry and assume the blackmailer is Jeff, while it is actually... her daughter (and her daughter's boyfriend as the bag man).
