Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Critical Race Theory

This week.... The Ottawa trucker vaccine protests in all their immense selfishness. And Now: The Existential Despair of ABC 3 Morning News. The main story is the right's latest bugaboo, Critical Race Theory (video, 28m), which Fox News and other right-wing media sources have inflamed their viewers and listeners about. What is it, what is it not, and why has the panic around it spread?

A lot of the misinformation around Critical Race Theory comes from Christopher Rufo. [NEW YORKER]

What's worth noting....
" that some of the organizers of this protest have strong views about issues other than COVID mandates. One of the convoy's de facto spokespeople has been Tamara Lich, who has ties to far-right groups in Canada and has been a leader within the 'Wexit' movement[...,]" which has agitated for some provinces to leave Canada."

Ted Cruz diss delivered Seussily:
"I do not like that Ted Cruz man!
I do not like him shouting 'Klan!'
I do not like him in a room,
I do not like him in Cancun.
I do not like him playing ball,
I do not like his face at all!
I wish he'd lose his cushy job.
That man Ted Cruz is a fucking knob."

I enjoyed his aside there about "ugly monkey JPEGs sold by and for dipshits".

The CRT stuff made me feel more angry than many of his segments, I think because it's so utterly infuriating that this stupid thing is working for them. It's such utter crap, I hate what has happened here so much.

This has been the right's playbook for decades. Gin up a controversy, get their people enraged about it, use it to push their agendas, repeat. Over and over and over again. Critical Race Theory is cancel culture is the antifa peril is the horror of wokeness. It's ALL CRAP, but they repeat it through their bullhorns very often, and then the credulous media parrots and both-sides it.
