Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend: Battle Street Food: Mason Hereford vs Curtis Stone
June 21, 2022 10:14 AM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

New Orleans chef Mason Hereford, sandwich specialist who owns two restaurants, Turkey and the Wolf and Molly's Rise and Shine, battles it out with Australian celeb chef Curtis Stone who's made his home in Los Angeles with Maude and Gwen Butcher Shop and Restaurant.

The secret ingredient for this episode is lamb! 1 hour, 5 dishes, must be "kissed by fire", and the first dish must be served by the 30 minute mark.

My wife and I recently watched the first and last episodes of the US Food Network series and this episode and while it’s no longer my thing, the Netflix felt a lot less padded, I guess because no commercial breaks=no interminable recaps of what you watched five minutes ago.

My Alton Brown apostasy is still as strong as ever though, ghah.

I just have a ton of affection for all iterations of this series. I remember watching the original Japanese episodes as a kid (with no subtitles) and having no clue what was going on, but just loving the drama. Anyway, I like how they're making this one more "epic" and grander in scale, and I like all the Iron Chefs they have on. I'll always remember how Ming Tsai brought in the air compressor for his Peking duck! Anyway, I'm still in the middle of this first episode, and I appreciate how very broadened the cuisines are now; Curtis Stone is here making kibbeh nayeh, Mason Hereford is making walking tacos!

I turned this episode on. Five minutes in, I searched out how to watch the original Japanese version (Peacock y'all!) and went to watch that instead.

Eventually I returned, but I don't vibe with it on the same wavelength. Is it a good competition show? Sure. I wanted something a bit more dramatic though, and with a bit less polish - if you're going to use the Iron Chef name, match the energy of the Chairman's Nephew 110%. Otherwise it's just a run of the mill cooking competition with the usual celebrity chefs.

(Still going to watch the whole thing though. Gregory Gourdet is coming up and I def. want to see that!)
