What We Do in the Shadows: Private School
August 5, 2022 9:59 PM - Season 4, Episode 5 - Subscribe

The vampires endure the private school admissions interview process.

The creature that crawled out of Colin Robinson is too much of a handful, and the vampires need sleep. Luckily, they have a connection to a school through next-door neighbor Sean. (SEANIE!!)

Great episode, though the hypnotism and who-is-Colin's-father joke began to run a bit thin. I loved Nandor's continued plastic surgery, which asks a lot of questions of why an immortal being would need a facelift in the first place. In any case, I laughed every time it panned to Nandor's Joan Rivers frozen face.

This season is obviously racing to where Nandor inevitably runs out of wishes from his genie and is stuck in a bad place, and also making us guess what Colin Robinson will become as an adult. I'm a little confused at how they manage to take him to things like soccer practice though I might have missed an explanation that simply Guillermo does it. Part of me wonders if they used a wish from the genie to be able to walk during the day except they have to sparkle or something silly like that it would open up a lot more plot possibilities.

I did love that Guillermo is skimming off the top of the club. I know he's fan likeable but I like the idea that deep down he's just a bad person that takes advantage of the vampires.

The characters on this show may be endearing but they're all quite evil in their own ways, even Guillermo. He seems like a lovable little underdog but we know he's been complicit in the murders of MANY people. He's lured people back to the house for the vampires, he's been around while people were murdered and I wouldn't be surprised if he's killed a few people himself. We've seen him have moments of guilt about all this but it apparently hasn't stopped him. I think we can hardly blame him for embezzling from the club, though. He's worked damn hard (and seemingly without pay) for years and his resentment against the vampires has grown to the point where he's finally acting out. If anybody has earned the right to skim some cash off the top, it's Gizmo!

I have no idea how Nadja will react when she inevitably discovers what Guillermo's up to. She's just spent a year in Europe with Guillermo as her bodyguard, and who knows how their relationship developed during that time? (Yet another question left unanswered after the show chose to punt on last season's cliffhanger!) I doubt it will turn out to be a major plot point, unless we find out Guillermo is spending his money on something big that will shake up the show's status quo.

Well, he wasn't a young guy when he became a vampire, and the vamps are rather vain creatures anyway. I'm not sure where they're going with this thing about Nandor being so desperate to please his wife at the same time that he doesn't seem really into her. Maybe all the flailing to improve himself is how he's distracting himself from the fact that he doesn't really want to marry her. At this point she seems like she's been reduced to kind of a smiling cypher, and I wonder if there might come a point where her original personality is restored and she's PISSED. Maybe the twist will be that Nandor marries her, can't bear to see how bland she's become and wishes for her to be restored... but then she utterly despises him and he's all out of wishes!

I sure didn't mind seeing the Impractical Jokers guy offed.

As dumb as that show is, Sal is probably the most likable one (to me at least). His line about "As long as its SAG minimum I'm up for anything" was great.

Nandor in the zoot suit and Laszlo dressed like Bobby Fieri was pretty awesome too.

Agree that the joke went on a bit long. And if the headmaster died of a massive stroke from too much hypnosis, what happened to Sean? Maybe he's such a dope that it doesn't put any strain on his brain.

I don't feel personal animosity toward any of the Impractical Jokers guys. I've enjoyed plenty of silly hidden camera shows (The Carbonaro Effect is lots of fun, for example) but there's something about Impractical Jokers that makes me bounce off hard after like 15 seconds. And it's always, always on! So my dislike is based more on the group's vibe and their ubiquity, rather than any notion of who they are as real people.

Did they say that the headmaster died? I wasn't sure if he just had a stroke or if he died. I got kind of a sleazy vibe about the school (Sean is an alum, after all) and I kept waiting for the moment when the headmaster would just ask for a small bribe to let Colin in, rendering all the hypnosis stuff unnecessary.

Apparently Laszlo's line about Sean being "my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my goodtime boy" (or however it went) has become a big thing on the TikToks, and people put it over footage of their cats and stuff.

also making us guess what Colin Robinson

Small’un Robinson is a delight, but so far I have assumed he will just turn into Colin Robinson.

And if the headmaster died of a massive stroke from too much hypnosis, what happened to Sean?

Sean already got the Brain Scramblies when they hypnotized him in the Superb Owl episode, and he was previously hypnotized when the Baron almost killed him and they made him forget. So I think that whatever is left of Sean is just used to it by now...

I don't know what it says about me that I found Nadja just, like, super hot even in her suburban-mom Dolores Umbridge disguise.

He is ... after all, what is more of an "Energy Vampire" than a child?

"Energy Vampires feed by boring or annoying their victims".
