After a somewhat lackluster summer season, we have some returning favorites and promising new shows. What are we all watching?

Season 2 of Spy X Family is obviously one I am looking forward to.

I'll be avoiding Chainsaw Man like the plague because it's apparently heavy on the gross side of horror. (No judgement, just really not my thing.)

I like the look of Do It Yourself!! -- It follows high school girls working on DIY projects, as they struggle, fail, yet don't give up and see the projects through to their end. The story depicts the lives of those girls as they take the first step toward the future.

hey, excited to see more anime on fanfare! it's been tough to find good places to talk about anime...

I have a lot of free time this season (I'm a full time Japanese student, even!) so I'm planning on watching way too much.

in general I try not to look too much up about shows so that I can sort of go into them without a bunch of expectations and meet them on their own. the tradeoff is that that means it can be harder to vet shows...I have my signals, but I can only sort of get away with this since I have a lot of time :P
  • chainsaw man: I like action, and this seems like they are going all out. the hype is unreal...I haven't read the manga, but the people I know who have love it. honestly the thing that has me most excited is that the director is the same person who directed the best fight in JJK
  • mob psycho 100 s3: s1 and s2 were such gems. very excited about season 3
  • spy x family: part 1 was fun, should be an enjoyable watch
  • Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!: this is sort of an iffy one, I dunno, maybe I should cut it. but people seem to have high hopes for it, at least on the action front?
  • urusei yatsura: anime is now entering the "remake every classic series that we can" phase that hollywood has been in for ages. I haven't seen the original but it's a classic, and I'm very curious how this will be with all the resources they will hopefully be giving it
  • reincarnated as a sword: I generally don't love isekai, but I know this is a beloved LN, and it's about a cute gal killing the bad guys. sounds like a fun premise if it's done well and/or funny
  • Akuyaku Reijou nanode Last Boss wo Kattemimashita: I am very excited to get a wave of otome isekais. my isekai exception. I want more shoujo and josei in general. the first episode has already come out and was a lot of fun!
  • Fuufu Ijou, Koibito Miman: animation looks cool, and I like romance. this was another iffy one though
  • do it yourself: I'm a sucker for these sorts of shows (someone already described what it's about)
  • Koukyuu no Karasu: I am pretty excited for this one, which could def lead to disappointment. I am a big fan of Chinese palace dramas, and am excited to see an anime take
  • bocchi the rock: cute girls and music, can't keep me away. another one where people really like the manga, so I hope it gets a decent adaptation!
  • Mushikaburi-hime: grounded historical romance? yes. absolutely. please!!
  • Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. the preview was very, very good, and convinced me to hop along (I highly recommend anyone who is on the fence check out the preview!). and it seems like a good way to dip a pinkie toe into gundam since it is an independent srtory
  • Cool Doji Danshi: another iffy one but but but it's about cute dudes being idiots. I love himbos. not sure if they will be full on himbos but I dunno it just sounds like a cute premise and sort of a nice chance to see a different type of dude than that which appears in lots of popular shows, esp shonen
  • Futoku no Guild: I am down to have at least one ecchi show a season...why not? the gals looked cutest for this one. probably should be a cut given the huge number of shows...
  • arknights: this game is very popular with a group of friends I have, so want to dip my toes into it
  • Uchi no Shishou wa Shippo ga Nai: everything about this is a must watch for me
  • Akiba Maid Sensou: sounds absolutely bonkers. hopefully in a good way
  • Aru Asa Dummy Head Mic ni Natteita Ore-kun no Jinsei: shorts, but I love gay shit
  • Eternal Boys: I'm currently becoming a full on idol simp, and this seems like a fun premise that could be cute

My Friday night anime stream group is going to finish Lycoris Recoil this week (yes I know it drops on Sundays, but Friday is the day we get together) and have been looking for a replacement. (We start at 8 and go until people start getting sleepy and log out, usually 2-3 episodes of various shows interspersed with chatter and random video clips).

I padded out last Friday with Pui Pui Mocar, and it looks like there will be a season 2 of that in October, so we have those as well.

Nobody but me is caught up on Boku no Hīrō Akademia so I'll likely be watching the new season of that on my own.

I've watched the original Urusei Yatsura but it was ages ago and I don't remember it very well. We'll probably watch and compare.

I've now seen the first episode of Spy X Family and it continues to be a delight.

The hype going into Chainsaw Man was at least the highest since Attack on Titan, and possibly ever. Episode 1 largely lived up to it though there were a few bits of ugly in the CGI animations. I’m a huge fan of the manga so it’s nice to see it getting the five-star treatment it deserves.

Other than that: hello Mob Psycho and Spy X Family, goodbye Lycoris and Overlord. Should probably catch up on Danmachi over on Hidive but the current arc was draaaaagging when I left it. Never started on Made in Abyss S2 as I just wasn’t in the headspace for it, and I gather it very much continues to be a good-headspace-only ride.

So after watching a lot fall season anime premieres, some which blurred together in my head, the only one that stands out with blinding neon lights in my brain is Akiba Maid War.

Akiba Maid War is definitely a trip. The TV news matter-of-factly reporting on maid war violence just adds to the surreal feel of the whole thing.

The anime I am finding the most annoying? frustrating? so far is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. There's this Korean expression, that something feels like "eating sweet potato," the unpleasant sensation that something is just stuck in your esophagus. That's how I've been increasingly feeling with each episode. Maybe I'll just have to accept it's not for me and drop it. And this after having been impressed by the prologue episode, sigh.

This is in contrast to say, Akiba Maid War, which leaves one with the sensation of drinking a refreshing fizzy beverage. The two expressions can be used together, to denote that Y ("drinking refreshing carbonated beverage") resolved the frustration caused by X ("eating sweet potato").

We're vacationing in Japan and everything everywhere is Spy x Family, Detective Conan, Tokyo Revengers, One Piece, and Chainsaw Man. Enough so, that I'm checking them out one by one.

Holy crap, Spy x Family is fun.

I am absolutely loving Spy x Family. Did not expect this going in, but the premise sets it up as a great metaphor for neurodivergence: a spy, a telepath, and an assassin all have to form a pretend family and hide their identities from the world! Not in a deliberate or bash-you-over-the-head-with-it way, but I think that anyone who's had to mask or self-monitor a lot, and who feels like they have to try very hard to be human, will relate warmly to this found family's shenanigans.
