Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey: All episodes (2022)
November 20, 2022 3:50 PM - Season 1 (Full Season) - Subscribe

An American documentary miniseries surrounding the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), an offshoot of mainstream Mormonism, and its current leader Warren S. Jeffs.

“When I was 14-years-old, they forced me to marry my cousin,” Elissa Wall says right at the beginning of the series. “I asked Warren, begged him, please don’t make me get married and he said, ‘do you believe that you know better than the prophet and if you’re questioning me you’re questioning God.’” (from a Yahoo review of the series.)

Spoiler (not really): Warren Jeffs is still leading the cult from prison. His persecution may have only strengthened the family.

Currently on Netflix U.S.

This whole thing was a wild ride. It is incredibly horrific, but some of the stuff is so unbelievably far fetched that it is difficult to even conceptualize it.

As a former Mormon I was adjacent to these contemporary stories and 100 years ago this was part of the Mormon experience. It's funny still if you live in the right community you will often see polygamists shopping next to you.

I am somehow drawn to portrayals of fundamentalists of various types, so I found this documentary fascinating. It's hard to imagine what my own response would be had I been born into this world, but I like to hope that eventually my brain would tell me to think for myself and GTFO. It's just hard watching this, knowing that some people have gotten out and others have no desire to leave what they have. Even after Jeffs went to prison, they blindly obey.

I was going to watch just two episodes yesterday evening and the remaining two tonight, but I stayed up way too late last night in order to watch all four back to back. The first three were so horrifying I'd begun to think I'd seen it all, but no, in the fourth the horror got ratcheted up to 15 out of 10. JFC. Through much of my watch I found myself tracing and analyzing the dynamics and patterns of abuse, which I seem to see everywhere on both a political and personal level these days.

I seldom wish another human being actual physical harm, but I hope Warren Jeffs gets shived in prison.
