Night Court: The Apartment
February 8, 2023 11:26 AM - Season 1, Episode 5 - Subscribe

In desperate need of a new apartment, Abby turns to Gurgs and her unconventional real estate skills. Dan helps Olivia prepare for the biggest case of her career and a shot at redemption.

No, this is not the 1986 episode of Night Court also called "The Apartment" (Hijinks ensue when Harry throws a birthday party for Dan at his apartment, including Christine getting trapped in a magician's box, Quon Le's Vietnamese family threatening mass suicide, and Mrs. Lund from Juvenile Services arriving to check on Leon at the same time as a stripper.).

Some solid character development for Abby and Olivia this week as Abby hunts down a new apartment away from the beer hall / sausage factory with help from Gurgs, while Dan mentors Olivia to prepare to impress a prominent lawyer without the use of pudding.

Dan recounts an incident from years ago in which he drunkenly stabbed a prominent lawyer with an oyster knife, then removed the knife, then had to stab the man again to staunch the bleeding. It's not as bad as it sounds, but it's still pretty bad.

Is this the first time across all of Night Court that we've seen a private, as in non-public, defender show up to argue a case and bench the public defender? I feel like it's never happened before.

I'm afraid that Abby's fiance is already gone. She just doesn't know it yet.

I'm torn between "It's gonna be a Big Guest Star who shows up one single time to tell her it's over" and "He's just gonna disappear without ever showing his face."

In the first scene, Gurgs (I think) says "And finding you a place will be super easy. I mean, who wouldn't want a judge owing them a favor?" But then Gurgs says "New York City landlords don't like renting to judges or lawyers." Not even counting the the overly sitcommy "I'm gonna tell you this new thing way too late to let you get ready for it, for no reason other than it will be funny", this does not make the slightest bit of sense to me. And it especially doesn't make sense that the landlord would make it so obvious that he doesn't want to rent to her, because now he's pissed her off.

The renting to a judge reversal was odd.

It's only been a few episodes, but I have been thinking that they'll just do a Maris (Nile's wife, from Frasier) and never show him on-screen.

I actually related SO HARD to Dan (of all freakin' people) in this. Wanting your students/mentees to do better than you did, that is REAL. And can, if not kept sternly in check, lead to everything being all about you. Which is not great.

My money's on Jon Hamm, but that's just a hunch.

Imagine if it’s a Big Bang Theory alum that breaks up with Abby. What’s Simon “Wolowitz” Helberg doing these days? It’d generate some headlines for sure.

Nah, make it Kunal Nayyar! He's the only one who aged hot, anyway.

I interpreted it as "who [that works in the criminal court building] wouldn't want a judge owing them a favor?" vs. "regular NYC folks hate judges and lawyers".
