Broad City: Knockoffs
February 4, 2015 2:26 PM - Season 2, Episode 4 - Subscribe
Abbi's date ends with a surprise, while Ilana and her mom search the city for the perfect handbag.
I'm consistently impressed! Pegging (heh) an episode on actually exploring a long teased romance AND introducing a main characters' family are both fraught with peril, but this was a delight in every way.

I had to keep stopping it because I needed to revel in the moments. Damn, this show is great. And then they throw Bob Balaban in there. With him and Essman as her parents, I now understand how Ilana happened.
It would never occur to me to put anything in the dishwasher, but then I've generally used them as large drying racks. Maybe there are awesome computerized ones now, but I don't trust 'em. Also, wouldn't you clean it fairly soon after use if it was such an upmarket all natural item? Of course I had to look it up and it's unsearchable as is. If only it was real, they would have busted the market. People are still desperate after Ilana's bras.

There are two occasions in my life when I am guaranteed to be made to weep with laughter: When I'm watching Broad City, and when I'm hanging out with my own bestie. You know how some women are like, "I'm a Carrie!" or "I'm a Samantha!"? I'm pretty sure my bestie and I are both Abbi and Ilana in equal measures. They are just such an incredible gift. I watched "Wisdom Teeth" and "Knockoffs" back to back last night and have come to the conclusion that this season might be even better than the first. And we're only on episode 4!
When Ilana punched her fists out to her sides at her grandmother's shiva and monster-growled, "This is the best day of my life!" after Abbi gave her the post-pegging confirmation, I had to pause the playback because I was fucking LOSING IT. Pitch perfect, every note. They're witty as hell when it comes to dialogue, but they're also such incredible physical comedians that it blows my mind.
Especially brilliant acting from Ilana and her 'mom' throughout -- when they're riding in the back of the cop cruiser and going on their separate rants so continuously that you can't make a single word out, there's a beat, and then one of them concludes her rant with "...prostitutes!" The timing is impeccable. It reminded me of this scene from Wayne's World in the best possible way ("...'til the handle breaks off and you have to get a doctor to pull it out again!")
GOD I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH. Even if there were infinity episodes, there still wouldn't be enough.

Someone made my favorite moment into a gif! Wait. There are at least two! The second one is better because it includes Abbi's nod. And I totally forgot that I'd already read about that scene in this beautiful piece by Rachel Syme for Grantland.
I fucked up the quote in my previous comment! Abbi's introduction to pegging makes the day of Alana's grandmother's shiva the happiest day of Alana's life, not the best.

I've thought that this season of Broad City so far has been relatively weak (& puzzled that BC warrants a Fanfare thread while the uniformly excellent and spellbinding Girls does not) but this episode definitely lived up to the best of season 1. The scene at the shiva, cutting from the (what you'd expect would be mortifyingly embarrassing) discovery of the dildo to Abbie and Ilana earnestly describing pegging to Ilana's rapt family, was especially delightful.

You know you can just post episodes of Girls yourself if you want to right?

"Ugh - that was *so* disgusting!"
I loved the mom in this episode and her obsession with purses - also that she had no boundaries whatsoever, which the daughter was so used to that this was their 'normal' setting, and Abbi was the only witness to their weird world.
The fart joke was unexpected and appreciated. And the visuals of how they shot Abbi in the pegging scenes were just hilarious - when she popped out from behind that curtain proudly wearing it - very funny.
This episode and the previous one, "Wisdom Teeth", have been on point.

Ilana's phone call was epic. I need a gif of that in my life.
