Finally right about one of my crazy theories (re: the therapist being hinky)

And boy, I can never tell if Misty is being genuine or manipulative.

Although I really liked this, I'm pretty much disavowing all my crazy theories; I think it's going to keep playing coy with the supernatural stuff (or lack thereof) right to the end, and honestly, if everything is exactly as it seems, that's...you know, I knew when Tori from Battlestar Galactica showed up in the first episode what I should expect in terms of Yellowjackets, like, having a plan of any kind beyond Killer Vibes, and here we are. I'm finally forced to conclude this show's not really going anywhere, but it's a fun ride.

That said! I was briefly excited when they went looking for Crystal, because it was like -- what if they found Crystal, and she's inexplicably alive, unharmed, and giving Misty knowing looks. Oh! So exciting! Chaos reigns!

I don't think chaos reigns enough on this show. It's never going to be the show I wanted it to be (indeed, it soon won't be any show at all, at least not for the foreseeable future), but I guess I can accept this vaguely horrific weird dramedy for what it is, to wit an entertaining shaggy dog story that will keep vamping until Showtime cancels it. That could be never.

One other thought I had with that beating at the finish - wow, pure fight club brutality - particularly with soccer kicks.

Misty gets her own Big Lebowski hallucination scene!

John Cameron Mitchell plays her bird!!

He points her back at the hobbit detective!!!

She's got angst in her pants!!!!

I am so here for this.

I'm kind of tickled that the Rekha Sharma was playing pretty much the same character in Yellowjackets as she did in Galactica: She's so good at it.

Killer Vibes is such a perfect way to describe this kind of thing. That sounds positively tvtropesian.

I wonder what happened to Lottie's first therapist? Was he real? Did he actually go on vacation? Will Misty be called upon to dispose of his remains?

If adult Van's scars are still that prominent — and those wounds were crudely addressed while stranded — I'm surprised adult Lottie's face isn't also similarly, uh battle-worn.

Oh! I forgot to mention that I loved how Caligula was an homage to the bird-themed killer in Michele Soavi's Stage Fright (aka Aquarius, aka Deliria, aka Bloody Bird), who I don't believe has a musical number, but should.

The show's creators reiterate that Yellowjackets is still on track for a five-season run.

Hmm, five seasons. I don't know, I've enjoyed S2, but it is a lot slower than S1. Also, at this point, I'm not sure why everyone is so mean about Misty being a psychopath. Is that what this episode is about? All these girls are unhinged.

Also, did Frodo get dumped and immediately go dig up Adam in revenge? If so, I look forward to him furiously backpedaling once he listens to his voicemail.

Well, there's "bury your problems in a bottle" unhinged and then there's "kidnap and murder a journalist" unhinged.

Also, at this point, I'm not sure why everyone is so mean about Misty being a psychopath.

It’s possible that at some point between where the past-timeline currently is and where the current-timeline starts they figure out that Misty destroyed the radio and they blame some of their fucked-uppedness on her.

Or it’s just a coping mechanism to think to themselves “I’m a mess, sure, but I’m not Misty.”

Hey, now that's not fair! Misty told her those things would kill her! :)

I love that Shauna assumed from the get-go that she would have to kill Bruce, and then at the end that very funny and natural statement turned out to be tragically key to how the time “in oblivion” (thanks Van) affected her.

Also absolutely loved Lauren Ambrose’s delivery when she said “months.”

Was it my imagination that the title song was a different version in this episode?
posted by Ivan Fyodorovich at 9:35 PM on May 21, 2023

No, they've changed up the title song a couple times this season.
