[TRAILER] Barents Sea, August 12th, 2000. During a Russian naval exercise, and after suffering a serious accident, the K-141 Kursk submarine sinks with 118 crew members on board. While the few sailors who are still alive barely manage to survive, their families push for accurate information and a British officer struggles to obtain from the Russian government a permit to attempt a rescue before it is late. But general incompetence are against all their efforts. (aka The Command.)

I remember really liking this and I've been wanting to watch it again recently. One thing I learned at the time I saw this is that most submarines that sink do so in water that is shallower than the length of the sub.

Definitely not one to judge by its IMDB rating, which might have been pulled down by people expecting a happy ending. No happy ending here, but a gripping story of survival—for a while—against the odds, and betrayal by those in charge.
Vinterberg got my attention with The Hunt/Jagten, and this to my mind was almost as good.
Guardian review. Currently streaming on BBC iPlayer for those in the UK.
