NOT READING ANY COMMENTS but DAMN! I didn't think another season was coming. I'll have to sub to Disney for just one month when the season is done. Also: DEER LADY!!!

I didn't know I was signing up to watch a horror movie this week.
If they don't submit this for an Emmy they're crazy.

Kaniehtiio Horn is both terrifying and vulnerable in this episode
I was reading her background. Holy shit. When she was four she was being held in her sister’s arms, when her sister was bayonetted in the chest by a Canadian Solider during the Oka Crisis. Her sister nearly died. Other First Nations people were killed during the Crisis.
I can’t even imagine the emotion of filming that scene for her and everyone involved. In some sense she IS the little girl at that Indian Boarding school. In that scene she really is the Deer Lady.
This show is amazing. Being from New Zealand / Aotearoa I recognize some of the themes and how they relate to Maori and our own shameful history of similar boarding school type programs (not a surprise with Taika Waititi‘s involvement). What a show. It is near compulsory viewing across US, Australia, NZ just for this episode alone.

Beautiful episode.
Bear seems to be on his way to becoming a shaman, in some sense of the word. And the message is, “it’s all connected.”
I noticed, at the end, the thing the young boy said, “Going fishing” -bongpipo hama, to my untrained ears, sounds a lot like the word Maximus uses to refer to the eggplant.
The spirit beings talk to Bear. The Deer Lady thanked him, and noticed the deep respect he offered her. His care in listening to Maximus, hearing his history and believing him — I’m interested to see where he ends up at the end of this, and what place he chooses in his community.

D'Pharoah Woon-a-Tai plays such a great balance between fear and respect in this episode and the previous one. I loved watching Bear's increasing openness to the internal lives of others instead of just dwelling in himself.

Adding more thanks for the links about Kaniehti:io Horn and the Oka Crisis. I just learned she also hosts a CBC podcast, Telling Our Twisted Histories.
Kaniehtiio Horn is both terrifying and vulnerable in this episode. She is really amazing.
Her acting and the smart writing worked so perfectly together. The horror was awful, with the nuns speaking in gibberish. While I suppose the episode left the absolute worst to our imaginations, those graves and the screams as Koda was dragged away...brrrrr.

Yeah, it's neat to watch him opening up through this series of strange experiences he's been bombarded with. But I'm not sure we've seen much direct evidence that he's fundamentally changed how he relates to the people in his life, though perhaps I've missed something. I'll keep an eye out during the rest of the season.
