Oscar's verdict; Clay meets Mr. Henderson. Agnes scolds Ada. Mrs. Fane arranges a match for Marian. Larry's new commission, and Peggy's return is bittersweet.
Did anyone else get the feeling that George Russell was hostile to Oscar because he knew full well that Oscar was gay? It would be very much in character for him to put an investigator on his daughter's suitors as a matter of course, and his reference to "marriages of convenience" and "we are not discussing this more explicitly" attitude seemed very coded. I don't really blame George for being angry with Oscar, because had Oscar succeeded in marrying Gladys he would have ruined her life. Fortunately Gladys's own good sense served her well. But the way Oscar looked, shrinking in his chair under George's death glare, knowing he'd been found out.... He did genuinely like Gladys and enjoy her company, and he would have done his best to treat her well and make her happy. It's not his fault that, as a gay man in the late Victorian era, he has no good options.
