Masters of the Air: Part Nine

Series finale. The POWs are marched across Germany—and Rosie makes a gruesome discovery—as the war comes to its conclusion.

Rosie gets shot down over the Eastern Front and after being rescued by the friendly if war-crimey Soviets, runs across Zabikowo in occupied Poland. After a grand tour of Eurasia and North Africa, he returns to Thorpe Abbotts, eager to return to the fight.

Luft Stalag III finds itself on the march, trying to stay one step ahead of the Soviets. Buck and a few others make a break for it, but Bucky stays behind to fly the flag as Germany falls apart and gets repeatedly strafed by P-51 Red-Tails.

As the war winds down, most of the gang reunites to drop food supplies to the starving Dutch. And then they’re flying home, leaving England empty and emotional in their wake.

A post-war montage ensues, showing how most of the survivors went on to lives of peace.

I did not realize until the montage at the end that these were stories of real people. But I did not watch the series really closely.

I really enjoyed this, with the focus on the men and less on the bombing. Not quite Band of Brothers good but similar to the Pacific one.
