Good evening, Europe! Good morning, Australia! Semifinal 1 begins Tuesday May 7th (today!), at 2100 CEST / 3:00pm EDT. Who will qualify for the Grand Final on Saturday? Which countries will be good, bad, or so bad they're good? Come on in to chat about the first round of performances!

HOW TO WATCH LIVE:

Viewers outside of the United States can watch via the official livestream for Semifinal 1 from the Eurovision YouTube Channel.

For those of us unlucky enough to be geoblocked from the official livestream, r/Eurovision has a comprehensive How to Watch guide! My go-to method for watching these days is through the Swedish National Broadcaster (SVT)’s official stream. American viewers can watch live with a subscription to Peacock, NBC's streaming service.

Hooray! Looking forward to today's Semi. Thanks as always, PearlRose!

By the way, for my Eurovision baking this year, I've settled on kladdkaka, which looks absolutely decadent... in other words, perfect for Eurovision.

Thanks for the post! I haven't been as excited about Eurovision this year and am hoping Semifinal 1 will regenerate my enthusiasm.

Um, I'm dumb, how do I figure out what time this thing is at? Sweden is 9 hours ahead of me, the website indicates 2100 hours so that sounds like 9 p.m. their time, noon PST....I think?
posted by jenfullmoon at 10:17 AM on May 7 [1 favorite]

@ jenfullmoon - You got it! 3 PM EDT/12 PDT. About 1.5 hours to go!

@JanetLand - April was a difficult month for me, personally speaking, so I haven't been able to follow Eurovision as closely as I usually do. I like several of the songs this year, so I'm hoping some good snacks and a good show for Semi 1 will also get me into the proper Eurovision "mood" for this week. It's usually my mid-year Christmas!

@May Kasahara - That cake looks absolutely amazing; I can smell the warm chocolate through my screen. Enjoy it!

Did Switzerland get knocked out? I thought the song by Nemo was better than some of those listed (maybe not Ireland's, Croatia's and Finalnd's but better than Portugal).

Ashwagandha: Switzerland is in Semifinal 2 on Thursday.

Ah my mistake Switzerland is in the second semi final block. Go Nemo!

Howdy, all! Hoping this will be fun. It’s just starting now.

Cyprus (2018)! The girlbop to which current girlbops aspire to. She still makes it look so effortless.
posted by PearlRose at 12:04 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

I was not expecting the show to open with "Fuego" :o
posted by May Kasahara at 12:05 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Chanel (Spain 2022) is pretty rad, too. Sweden 2011 in the middle though... eh. I guess the host country is a bit lacking in recent girlbops.
posted by PearlRose at 12:08 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Oh yeah, I love "SloMo". The whole opening was very good. I love seeing great non-winning songs come back in later shows.

Wondering if the cloth Eric Slaade (?) was wearing around one wrist was a tribute to Palestinians. It has been made completely clear that Palestinian flags are forbidden.

Oh hey, Malin Åkerman! I don't think I realized she was born in Sweden.

Going in completely blank this year, so I'm excited to see what's in store...

Song #1 - Cyprus! I like the postcards this year! It's always so fun seeing some of the old fan favorites. I wonder if it's a lot of pressure for the artists, though?

Otherwise, good opener, good energy, but kind of simple? Too simple. Needs more glitter.
posted by PearlRose at 12:17 PM on May 7

Cyprus was okay, but it was missing something.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:18 PM on May 7

It was missing coherent lyrics. I am enjoying Serbia’s song but maybe bc I don’t understand the lyrics.
posted by Bella Donna at 12:20 PM on May 7

#2 Serbia.

I do prefer moody artistic Serbia most of the time. The wide camera angles are a little harsh. It takes away from the heartbreaking quality of the song. And the flashing lights seem like an odd choice.

The song is great, her vocals are just right, but the camerawork isn't quite selling the staging for me. A shame. I don't hate it, but it's just... a little flat.
posted by PearlRose at 12:21 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

PearlRose, I thought the singer was the weakest part of Serbia's entry myself. It was pretty strong overall, though.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:22 PM on May 7

WTF is up with Lithuania’s nose armor?
posted by Orange Dinosaur Slide at 12:23 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Am emotionally obligated to root for the Lithuanian song as a fellow bisexual plus one of my best friends here in Sweden is from Lithuania. Of course I will be rooting for other songs too.
posted by Bella Donna at 12:25 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Why does the Lithuanian song remind me of Kylie Minogue's "Can't get you out of my mind" ?
posted by needled at 12:25 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Yeah, I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist. Her singing wasn't great on a technical level (nerves, I guess), but I thought it fit the moody vibe she had going on. Serbia is still a bit borderline for me, though.
posted by PearlRose at 12:25 PM on May 7

Lithuania was... really cool (and needs a seizure warning).
posted by May Kasahara at 12:25 PM on May 7

#3 - Lithuania. One of those small countries that constantly punches above their weight. (I'm secretly hoping they get a win sometime this decade because they try so hard and clearly love Eurovision so much.)

Sharp. The first song to get me bopping along properly. Tight staging, excellent choreo, catchy beat.
posted by PearlRose at 12:25 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

#4 Ireland - QUALIFY THE WITCH.

I'll be honest, the screamy lyrics hurt my ears a bit. They're doing it just right for the vibe the song has got going, it just is a hard vocal technique for me to tolerate.

But goodness gracious! They really worked hard on getting the entire package just right and I can absolutely admire that kind of artistry.
posted by PearlRose at 12:29 PM on May 7 [4 favorites]

I don't know that I like Ireland's song, but it certainly is a memorable performance. Part sentimental torch song, part metal screaming, our girl contains multitudes.
posted by the primroses were over at 12:29 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Ireland: UM, WOW. Their entries are usually a bit more staid.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:30 PM on May 7

Excuse me, our artist contains multitudes, I think they just stated Ireland's contestant in non-binary.

Data entering while watching.

UK upping their game again, whoo! Sam Ryder giving them a taste of that top 10 life changed things for the better, perhaps.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:36 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Well, at least the UK has a bigger box than Loreen's from last year.
posted by needled at 12:36 PM on May 7 [3 favorites]

PREVIEW #1 (?? IDK, this is brand new this year) - United Kingdom

I'm enjoying the UK's recent attempts to actually give a damn about what they're sending. This one's really fun! Tight camerawork, fun effects, understandable vocals. Just the right amount of camp. (I am worried about the singer sounding a bit out of breath, but that might be the audio.)
posted by PearlRose at 12:37 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

I loved the UK’s number but that’s partly bc it makes me emotional to see openly queer anything when queer folks are under attack all around the globe.
posted by Bella Donna at 12:40 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

Dang, but Ukraine always brings it
posted by meese at 12:40 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

#5 - UKRAINE.

I'm still not a fan of the song itself (Mama Theresa, really?) but that staging is incredible. Ukraine always does a fantastic job of fufilling the brief.
posted by PearlRose at 12:41 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Ukraine is a banger. Love the staging and the costumes, and the song is fantastic. My favorite so far.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:41 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Serious question - what does the live audience see when the performers are in a box on stage? I saw some of the rehearsal footage and it looked like the cameramen had to actually go inside to get footage for the TV audience, and not much seemed to be visible for a live audience.
posted by needled at 12:44 PM on May 7

#6 - Poland

Someone renewed Poland's movie maker subscription for the graphics, I see.

My ears hurt again, but I'm afraid this time it's not because of the stylistic direction of the vocals. Ow. The dancers are great... what's with the horse? Huh?
posted by PearlRose at 12:45 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

The horse fits with the chess theme, I guess.
posted by May Kasahara at 12:45 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

#7 - Croatia!!!

Please meow back.
posted by PearlRose at 12:46 PM on May 7 [4 favorites]

Poland's song can easily be read as Sauron apologia.

I love the lace doilies on the cymbals in the Croatian drum kit.
posted by needled at 12:48 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

Speaking of horses, Croatia's like, "Hold my beer", as usual.

Pyro, a cohesive package, charisma for days, oh yes please. The crowd is eating out of his hands. Definitely my favorite example so far this year for "Eurovision in three minutes."

Oh man, Croatia just some my heart, I couldn't stop grooming through all that brilliance.
posted by meese at 12:50 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

#8 - Iceland.

The staging is charming! Hera seems lovely. I adore her jumpsuit! She is a wonderful singer.

...I just wish her song was better.
posted by PearlRose at 12:53 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

Better would be good.
posted by Bella Donna at 12:54 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

*sigh* I have to go join a call and will be missing the rest of the performances.

I was looking forward to Windows95man.

And Marcus & Martinus, because they sound so k-pop! Probably share the same songwriters, Swedish songwriting teams are an integral part of k-pop.
posted by needled at 12:58 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Preview #2 - Germany

The singer has come out and said that the song is about living with ADHD. (I can relate. I kind of appreciate the song more now that I have that context.)

It's still a bit way too safe for Eurovision, even with the all the pyro. The trash fire is an excellent touch, though!
posted by PearlRose at 1:01 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Germany singing his own echoey parts is a little weird.
posted by May Kasahara at 1:01 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

The echo is driving me crazy, him singing it I mean.
posted by Bella Donna at 1:02 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

#9 - Slovenia

More dark and moody vibes. This one was stuck in my head earlier, the trills are such an interesting touch. I think this is my favorite of the three artsy witchy songs, but I fully admit Ireland had the more comprehensive full package.

I'd still like to see this one in the final, though. It's definitely my vibe.
posted by PearlRose at 1:06 PM on May 7

FINLAND, WHAT

#10 - Finland

No rules, but they had to blur the Windows logo on his shirt ...because rules. (I guess the rules applied?)

I love the Swedish TV thing of blurring commercial logos. Maybe other EU countries do it too, dunno.

#11 - Moldova

I am just so disappointed in Moldova this year, even more so after seeing the two acts referenced in the postcard preview.

This is so generic and safe. What happened? Moldova, is everything okay?
posted by PearlRose at 1:15 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Moldova's staging is very nice, though the big water droplets would've also been appropriate for Finland's (they remind me of mid-90s 3D graphics software).
posted by May Kasahara at 1:15 PM on May 7

Are the swedish kids twins?
posted by meese at 1:17 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

My theory on Moldova is they’re on a 3-4 year cycle. A few years of awesome and then one year of boring.
posted by Orange Dinosaur Slide at 1:17 PM on May 7 [2 favorites]

Sweden's staging is mind-blowingly good. Great song, too.
posted by May Kasahara at 1:19 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

Preview #3 - Sweden

The twins are adorable (clearly I am getting old). The song might be called Unforgettable, but I'm having a difficult time remembering it. Sleek staging though -- maybe a little too bright? My eyes hurt (oh, definitely getting old).
posted by PearlRose at 1:20 PM on May 7

#12 - Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan always presents just a sleek staging -- they put a lot of effort into it every time. But the AI LED ...person? Model? is unnerving and highly distracting.

I can't remember a thing about the song but those hands will haunt me.
posted by PearlRose at 1:24 PM on May 7

#13 - Australia!

Australia is my dark horse this year. I want this song to qualify more than anything, but I'm worried this isn't quite enough to make it happen. It's just so much fun.
posted by PearlRose at 1:29 PM on May 7 [1 favorite]

#14 - Portugal

Portugal has brought something really different compared to the other songs in this semi. It's mesmerizing.
posted by PearlRose at 1:32 PM on May 7

#15 - Luxembourg

Welcome back, I think? Luxembourg is trying really hard and this is a nice note to end the semi on. Fun, good staging, definitely trying to make a good impression!

I can't watch now because I am at work but I am really enjoying these comments as a preview to when I watch it later.

2. Lithuania
3. Croatia
4. Luxembourg
5. Serbia

I am not in love with anything from this semi on first listen, but I hope Ireland, Croatia, Finland and Australia all make it through.

I'm hoping for: Ukraine, Australia, Croatia. If those three make it, I'm happy.
posted by meese at 1:44 PM on May 7

Croatia, Lithuania, Australia are my top three, and Ireland and Slovenia would be nice, too. Honestly, at this point, there are 12-13 that I would be very okay with qualifiying, and there are only 10 spots, so something's gonna get left behind.
posted by PearlRose at 1:48 PM on May 7

I missed most of the acts because I forgot it was on but liked Moldova and Finland. I'm in "the rest of the world" and won't be voting because I don't want my cc blocked because my bank is extremely aggressive on foreign charges so my opinion doesn't matter.

I hate the tailoring of the hosts' suits. Not glam, not well fitting. Very sad.

I actually very much liked the interval act with Johnny Logan singing Euphoria. It feels super appropiate.

Ireland's exorcism followed by the Ukrainian call to prayer in the recap sequence is actually pretty funny.

I'm a little sad about Australia, but even I can admit it just wasn't quite meant to be. They just didn't seem to have the support from their broadcaster this year, and that's a real shame.

Congrats to all ten qualifying countries - it was a great show and I'm very happy with all of them. Well deserved.

Pooh, of my favorites, only Win95 man got in. I somewhat like the witch one, but the screaming is not my favorite. I liked "The Tower" and Australia and the falling one.
posted by jenfullmoon at 3:35 PM on May 7

I'm re-watching Semi 1 with my spouse, who was at work during the live airing. All of these acts are largely very good!

We both really liked Australia and agreed that Iceland was such a lovely performer. We both agreed that in a different year, either act might’ve qualified. The quality was so good this year.

This happened last year as well and I can't tell if it is something wrong with my TV setup or something in the conversion to streaming or what.

I don't know about other people, but I only watch Eurovision for the over the top acts.

Bland chart-safe pop music is everywhere.
I want national costumes, traditional music remixed for metatheads, lyrics I don't understand but are super catchy.

If you don't use the LED floor, smoke machine, some sort of moving prop and the pyrotechnics in your stage show, I'm not voting for you.

Ireland was not good but it was a spectacle and that's what I'm here for.

What about destroying the LED floor? Windows95man was at risk of not being able to use his pyrotechnics but they came up with a solution - you can see the tarp they put on the floor in his semifinal performance.
