May 9, 2024 8:31 AM - Subscribe

Good evening, Europe! Good morning, Australia! Semifinal 2 begins Thursday, May 9th (today!), at 2100 CEST / 3:00pm EDT. Who will qualify for the Grand Final on Saturday? Which countries will be good, bad, or so bad they're good? Come on in to chat about the second round of performances!

HOW TO WATCH LIVE:

Viewers outside of the United States can watch via the official livestream for Semifinal 2 from the Eurovision YouTube Channel.

For those of us unlucky enough to be geoblocked from the official livestream, r/Eurovision has a comprehensive How to Watch guide! My go-to method for watching these days is through the Swedish National Broadcaster (SVT)’s official stream. American viewers can watch live with a subscription to Peacock, NBC's streaming service.

Looking forward to Estonia!

The placement of "Europapa" as the closing song is perfect - high energy shoutout to a borderless Europe, then closing on a melancholy note. The song was designed for Eurovision, no?

I hope Marina Satti has recovered enough to be able to perform tonight - such a shame she got ill before her semifinal.

When today's acts were announced at the end of the first Semi, I realized what this year's trend-popularized-by-the-previous-winner is: singers with one name. Kinda boring! I was sort of hoping for more panini presses.
posted by May Kasahara at 11:48 AM on May 9

@jenfullmoon Thank you! I looked up the link for Semi 2 yesterday on SVT when I drafted the post, but I think I forgot to update it.

Spouse is home today, so he's gonna watch Semi 2 with me. Since he's nice, I have a plate of charcuterie in front of me, to ensure I eat something while I watch. There's Italian proscuitto, Irish blue cheese, German sourdough, and some kind of English goat cheese.

Along with European grazing board, there are also Iberian Ham flavored potato chips. These going to be delicious or the worst thing ever. I can't wait to try them.

Semi 1 had all my favorite entries so we'll see how Semi 2 goes. It's another fairly strong entry with a lot of entries that could qualify with a good performance. Let's do this.

Sorry, I meant tanning beds, not panini presses, obviously!

Huh, Malin's dress with the crotch/cleavage outlines in hypercolor pink is sure a choice.

I read a comment on Reddit that there appears to be more male nudity than female nudity this year and Malta doesn't let us down with the shirtless dudes.

Solid opener from Malta. Good energy, good dancing, and lots of sparkles and shirtless dancers. Very Eurovision.

I enjoyed the first song, but the second number is definitely not doing it for me.

Very good entry from Albania this year (and that dress is great).

I am terrible at cleaning so I am taking this opportunity to watch on my laptop while I try to fold up clothes and put away shit in my bedroom. And of course that is made easier with your company.

Spouse noticed from the postcard that Albania seems to suffer a bit, results-wise. They do tend to send fairly polarizing things.

As far as this year goes, I don't get the weird hands. I like her voices. Her presence is great! I still wish she hadn't translated the song to English because otherwise, I think I would've loved it.

Greece is doing a really cool thing here with the camera work. The presentation is really tight and fun, but I can hear the stuffiness in her voice, poor thing.

Lying down on the floor with the LEDs is definitely A Thing this year.

I liked that Greece incorporated some traditional elements, not nuts about the song.

The Swiss delegation has been in it to win it for at least the last 5-6 years.

This was spectacular. My favorite entry of theirs in years.

OMG I'm watching this live for the first time (Italy).
posted by sammyo at 12:23 PM on May 9 [2 favorites]

I really enjoyed Greece - Marina Satti has this cool friend who's fun to hang out with energy to her, which I much preferred to say, Cyprus.

Nemo's vocals were amazing, especially that he was doing this while on that rotating tilting surface.
posted by needled at 12:25 PM on May 9 [1 favorite]

I like the message of Czechia's song a lot. It's a great empowering rock song.

She unfortunately, is not the strongest singer, and I think she's getting a little lost on the stage with everything going on, and having the poor luck to come after that Swiss entry.
posted by PearlRose at 12:26 PM on May 9

Enjoying Czechia's singer and staging, but not the song itself.

posted by Orange Dinosaur Slide at 12:55 PM on May 9 [1 favorite]

Latvia doesn't seem to be afraid of the potential expense. The simple staging is beautiful, and the song is quite good for a Sad Boy Ballad. On another note, that cobalt blue chestplate is certainly something.
