My 10yo son asked to see this and I'm trying to encourage him to go to the movies so I said yes.

It's the kind of movie you almost want to hate as the franchise is basically a soulless extruded corporate project. But it's actually pretty good. A skilled team has given some heart to the character with a tragic adoption story, the animation manages to mix some clever old-school flattenings and stretchings into the 3D, and the slapstick had a theatre of kids laughing hysterically.

I'd say it's kind of at the level of the "Ice Age" movies: not as good as the best Pixar animations, but a cut above the lazier franchises.

I'd agree. I personally thought the adoption angle/missing dad was kinda lame, but my kids liked it, and the villains were pretty fun. Not sure what was going on with Odie in this movie. Like secret genius/ninja?
