My Oni Girl (2024)

A shy teenage boy's inability to say no is tested when a headstrong girl drags him on a mystical journey amid summer snow to find her missing mom.

Japanese title: Suki demo Kirai na Amanojaku. The meaning is something like "The Contrary Person I Dislike But Like Anyway." The amanojaku is a minor devil that does the opposite of what it's told.

This is not a Studio Ghibli film, but it's pretty close. Hiiragi, a kindly boy that has trouble speaking up for himself, meets Tsumugi, an irresponsible girl who is quite willing to take advantage of him. Tsumugi prevails upon Hiiragi to escort her to the Hie Shrine to meet up with Tsumugi's mom. But things are not quite what they seem, as Hiiragi realizes when he discovers Tsumugi's horn, which marks the girl as an oni.

I greatly enjoyed the pair's journey to the shrine. They meet some nice people and bond together over their "adventures." Things take a darker turn when they reach the shrine and learn that the oni's Hidden Village is under threat.

I enjoyed this a lot. It reminded me strongly of Makoto Shinkai’s recent movies, especially Suzume (2022).
