[TRAILER] Young farm girl Mari is forbidden by her father from seeing Máté, the young man she loves. Her father, sick of being told what to do, wishes to leave the collective, and sees giving his daughter in marriage to an old but rich man as his way out. But Máté is ready to stand up to any challenge to keep Mari's love, and Mari herself doesn't like being told what to do any more than her father does.

Starring Mari Törőcsik, Imre Soós, Ádám Szirtes, Béla Barsi. Original title: Körhinta.

Directed by Zoltán Fábri. Written by Zoltán Fábri, László Nádasy, Imre Sarkadi. Cinematography by Barnabás Hegyi. Edited by Ferencné Szécsényi.

Commonly held to be one of the finest Hungarian films ever made.

No options currently on JustWatch but it is streaming via EasternEuropeanMovies.com.

This is really lovely, with black and white cinematography that rivals clasic silent films.

The sequence at the fair with shots from Máté and Mari's POV on various rides together would be impressive if shot today.

(Ditto the dance, obviously.)

Having noted who made the post, I kept waiting for the horror twist in the write-up and was momentarily confused when I reached the end without finding it. It doesn't help that it sounds like the kind of setup that could take a twist into horror if it were a different kind of story.

While your diligence in posting horror movie write-ups is no doubt appreciated by fans of the genre, I encourage you to post more classics of Hungarian film if you feel moved to do so - it's not a genre that gets much exposure in the rest of the world.

I do post a lot of horror, but I'm also FF's primary poster of sad Eastern European films, probably top three in commercial Indian films, way up there for Korean action & sci-fi, certainly among the advocates for Indonesian film...

For Hungarian film, check out Twilight by György Fehér, anything by Béla Tarr (Sátántangó and Turin Horse are on FF as well.)

Twilight, in particular, if you can find it, is a revelation. One review called it so minimalist, it verges on maximalist and that is about right. I think it's on EasternEuropeanMovies.com.
