WHY ARE HUMANS NOT DEER? (PV2)
After one of the most successful viral marketing campaigns in the history of anime, Peak Brainrot has arrived in all its glory! [OP] [ED] [WP ]

Reactions from the Internet:
"Humans have known how to make art for 40,000 years.
It took 40,000 years for us to reach artistic perfection."
"My favourite genre, shitpost with a budget."
"This is a pothead’s Citizen Kane."
"Studio Wit quit Attack on Titan to make this."

Episode 1 Synopsis:
After breaking the fourth wall 40 seconds into the first episode, delinquent-turned-model-student Torako Koshi (aka "Koshitan") saves a stranded deer girl named Noko Shikanoko (aka "Nokotan"). After being announced as the new transfer student to Koshitan's class, Nokotan nearly outs Koshitan as a former delinquent (and virgin?), leading to a fateful restroom confrontation. Nokotan finishes her first day of school by starting a Deer Club with her deer friend Koshitan and the support of their teacher, while a hidden adversary plots their downfall.

Ominous 3D models of deer observe and occasionally chant SHIKA throughout.

This may be the greatest television event since Quantum Leap, and I do not say that lightly.

It is definitely a case of “you know whether this is for you after watching the trailer.” When that massive slo-mo explosion kicked in during the PV2 trailer, I knew.

The first episode suffers a little bit from having much of its best bits in one of the two trailers, but it still absolutely delivered what was promised. According to the manga readers it stays good and there is a shocking amount of serious worldbuilding lore behind the deer… all of which is completely ignored by the main cast at all times.

The state of the world of late has me in the frame of mind that Arthur was in at the beginning of the third Hitchhiker’s novel - trapped on prehistoric Earth, living completely alone in an isolated cave for years, sticking a bone in his beard and announcing to the world with arms spread wide: “I will go mad!”

In the spirit of that declaration: I cannot begin to describe how badly I needed this show at this exact moment in time.

I had not heard about this till I saw it on here, and I twisted my wife's arm to watch it tonight (she knows my love of weird anime). I already love the dynamic between Nokotan and Koshitan and both girls' absurd backgrounds. They seem committed to turn this up to 11 the whole way and I am here for it (my wife, maybe not so much).

I learned about deer crackers!

OK, fine. But why was Nokotan suspended from the powerlines?? Don't leave me hanging! (Heh.)

I can't help but feel that Leave the World Behind would have been improved had the deer chanted SHIKA SHIKA when the appeared.

It's pretty weird. Thank goodness I have normal programs like One Piece (hey, Chopper) and BoJack Horseman (hey, Charlotte) to turn to.

My wife did remind me that one of the first animes we watched together was Hare+Guu, so maybe she's down for this one after all. We'll see where it goes!

Ryvar, you missed this important contribution from Marcille.

Awesome. There are hundreds of these - or at least several dozen that I’ve seen and hundreds other people have referenced in compilations & montages. I’ve been saving particularly good ones to a Youtube playlist and I’ll include that one in the post for next week’s episode 🦌

Fellow servants of our Deer God should feel encouraged to link their favorites as well.

For those who care about such things: this episode is now on track to be the highest rated first episode of Summer 2024 in the weekly rankings for /r/anime by a fair margin, possibly some other rankings trackers as well. And no, I only care about such things for series I am really, really into (most recent previously: Chainsaw Man).

My only regret is this week saw Crunchyroll delete their comments for every single episode of every single show they host due to homophobic brigading of two BL shows. While those comment sections were always Youtube quality at best, for shows like this one or any Domestic Girlfriend-level artisinal dumpster fire they always had that Rocky Horror / MSTK audience energy. A shame: this would’ve been one of the good ones for that feature.

After episode 2 my wife asked "who is the target audience for this show? besides you, obviously."

I replied, "Weirdos?"

This is without a doubt the best piece of media that I’ve encountered this year.
