Slow Horses: Penny For Your Thoughts
September 18, 2024 6:42 AM - Season 4, Episode 3 - Subscribe
River is trapped in France. Back at Slough House, the Dogs have come for Lamb.
Awhile back, after watching watching the first season, I listened to a bunch of the audiobooks, and I think I'm one book ahead of this season. I'm only slowly remembering details as each episode goes forward, but I think this episode was possibly a break from the book (which so far had been pretty faithful)? Not in a terrible way, but in a "make it make sense in a visual and keeping the main characters on the screen" way.
Anyway, not talking about book spoilers, since I think this show is way better than the book, but I did laugh at River being so smug about escaping via the rooftop then immediately falling into the shed -- and then, of course, realizing he is still being chased and grabbing a motorbike from some random dude, only to realize it is a motorized bicycle.
If I had to sum up the feel of the series, I think that would be pretty much it.

Couldnt figure out why the dog suddenly stopped chasing River, it was gaining on him.

Fucking with Flyte seems to be the bloodsport of this season, and I'm here for it.
[With +1 for Flyte as a character, and how she dealt with sub-PUA Roddy]
And man do I need a tussie-mussie.

The theme for this episode was: TIRES.
So if I'm understanding correctly now... there was some sort of gross situation where that guy who burned down the decrepit French mansion was actually the father of a bunch of kids (sons?) from many women of various backgrounds. And one of them was the mall bomber. And so his whole "You will hear from my brothers" line was like literal brothers? And Sam the Bag Man may be the one guy who has been to that place in France and, we suspect, knows some things. And no one knows where David Cartwright is right now.
I stan Molly Doran, she is a badass and can see through that slimy First Desk guy. I'll never tire of a good compact shelving visual.

Dude. River brought cookware to a gunfight.
Claude Whelan, played by James Callis, putting up a strong fight for “dumber strategy” though, in digging further. When he crashes and burns, will he end up in Slow Horses, or launched from the services as if by catapult? (My guess: catapult)
River's bad luck is just impressively consistent.
I honestly guessed that he was talking to a parent because of that!
Ditto for “ah, he’ll calm them down.” (punch!)
And pausing: "I locked that door so well!" (admires his work)
And throwing the two-fingered salute right before falling through a roof.
Lamb looked for a weapon, and grabbed a car.

A lot of what's fun in the show is watching the slightly broken misfits bumble their way through and succeed despite their feelings. We like our misfits and losers.
So seeing David Cartwright have complete senile dementia is heartbreaking. He's not a funny kind of broken, he's an all too believable and sad conclusion to many lives.
Also I was rattled by the new slow horse, the incredibly uncomfortable guy in the hood. Who finally shows some action today, a response to what sounds like a truly awful and not funny at all assault. He seems so broken I wonder how he works for the security services at all.

Slow Horses Incompetence Index: Flyte Risk [Vulture / Archive]
(I think they missed River's biggest incompetence, which was finding out the names of the bomber, his grandfather's attacker, and their ringleader, and not telling Jackson or anyone else...)

So who else thinks that discount-River is, in fact, his cousin?
Fathered by grampy oh so long ago in a wee trip to France.

Although he comes across as entirely useless, I 100% believe this is either:
1) a clever ruse
2) the usual upward-failing white fucko
In either case, he's going to come out of this looking a lot better than Diana (who is, of course, Too Smart For Her Own Good)

Based on Natasha’s reminiscences isn’t the takeaway they are half-brothers, with Harkness being father to both?

That makes somewhat more sense... I guess we don't know anything about River's parents.
