The Great British Bake Off: Caramel Week
October 15, 2024 3:46 PM - Season 15, Episode 4 - Subscribe

It's all about delicious melted sugar this week as our bakers sail a treacherous course between the Scylla of burnt bitterness and the Charybdis of crystallisation. Featuring caramel biscuits, a pear Tarte Tatin technical, and a showstopping caramel mousse cake.

Star baker... seriously!?!? You can be star baker with a mediocre challenge AND showstopper now? Serious side-eye.

She didn't have a mediocre signature though. A few of them got stuck but if not for that, she would have gotten a handshake. And she came first in the technical. Dylan's showstopper wasn't perfect either. I think it was really close. I wasn't surprised about who went home, but I was sorry to see him go. At this point of the competition, I'm pretty fond of all of them.

Glad Nelly’s still with us after Noel broke her caramel jug, I would have rioted if she went home!

I wasn't surprised about who went home

Oh no, Baby Stephen Fry is gone?....

On the signature: uniformity and neatness are a criterion for judgement as well as taste. It's all part of baking prowess. "Oops some of them broke" is a reflection on a baker's skill.

I think Christiaan and Dylan both did better. But they probably didn't want to give it to Dylan two weeks in a row.

I'll miss the one who went home too; I liked him. But like John before him, he had a wretchedly bad week.

I hope Sumayah can recover; I think she's wonderfully inventive, but I can see how aiming too high might trip her up.

Roll on pastry week!

It's good that Nelly adores Noel so much, because I think most people would have buried that rolling pin in his skull after that bullshit. Her showstopper cake looked incredible, too. She's become my fave, which I think means she's doomed; no one ever wins it that I am rooting for.

Although I really did like Michael, he truly did look like baby Stephen Fry! I liked his farm and the things he brought in from his garden.

Michael’s wheezy joy with Noel when he said “It’s Pollocks,” was so adorable. I was hoping he’d survive, but I’m afraid Nelly is also my favorite.

We're into the middle section now when I quite like all of the middling bakers who will be sent home over the next few weeks. But, by now everyone has also made a respectable showing, so they should all be going home feeling pretty good about themselves.

I was really worried Sumayah was going home (and maybe, strictly on this episode's execution, she should have) but I do think her more ambitious bakes should have kept her in ahead of Michael.
