Well, that was lackluster finale to a great series. Peggy Carter took back seat on her own show, for the sake of redemption of Howard Stark and everything just limped along for unexplained reasons.

From Sousa going around and touching everything at the crime scene to the SSR office being constantly outsmarted again, it was as if the characters just reverted back to some idiotic phase. Did the writers of the BSG finale write this? Peggy pours out the super soldier serum because...what?

The addition of Zoya at the end was nice, along with Dottie's escape and Peggy's coming to term with Steve's death. But at this point, I'm leery of a second series based on how poorly this one failed to live up to the excellent premise and promise.

I enoyed it, and I think seeing a female character who doesn't need dumbassess and blowhards to validate her work after she's just saved the world is one of the more feminist things I've seen on television.

It had a lot of good moments but it didn't quite manage the heights of some of the previous episodes. Still. I really like where things were left at the end. I want another eight episode series now, pls.

Maybe you don't put two criminal masterminds in the same cell? Seems like the wrong call.

Peggy's farewell to Steve was lovely and heart wrenching.

I feel like this series will benefit from binge watching cause it only got that fast-paced spy show retro feel I wanted in like fits and starts and the last few episodes are LOADED with that kinds stuff and I hope this gets another go cause these last three-sih episodes are WHAT I'VE WANTED - hot jazz fight music and all.

It goes out on a bang, and it'll a be a fine standalone, but MORE PLEASE, WITH A BIGGER BUDGET for more STATLEY STARK MANOR and FISITCUFFS

I'm sure we'll get more. Perhaps after Ant Man comes out, Carter will meet a young Dr Pym.

This was a lovely episode, if not *quite* as awesome as some earlier ones. Her goodbye was heartbreaking and perfect.

I was so happy to see Angie back that it was kind of comical, even to me. And to have them as housemates! There was literally fanfic about this last week!

If it was me, and it's not, I'd have the next series jump ahead a bit and be about what I wanted it to be about: The formation of SHIELD from the SSR dramatizing how HYDRA infiltrated it from the start. Switch the adventure-action 40s tone for a spy thriller late 50s 'age of anxiety" tone, less fisticuffs and more strained conversations and hidden microphones, borrow a bit from period SF and monster movies. Show and sore up all the period-relevant back story for the rest of the MCU and have a downbeat ending on how compromised SHIELD was the start and how its mission was decaying from the get-go. This gives you a nice platform for a final series, Peggy is a senior administrator in SHIELD and has to go into the field for one more case in late 60s New York.

This seemed less a blockbuster finish, and more of a quiet coda to an otherwise tense arc. Oh, the doctor? He can just casually say a handful of words, even over radio, and you'll be under his deep spell! Instead of being terrifying, he ended up being such an unbelievable, lazily written snooze. When your greatest enemy can be thwarted with a pair of ear plugs, perhaps he's not the enemy we first feared. All season we've seen Peggy as an energetic, savvy, insightful brawler. To see her cap the season's "biggest" challenge by pleading over radio was a let down, though her heartfelt goodbye to Steve rang true.
Of course, imagining the hijinks of Angie & Peggy, Girl Roommates, Inc. is absolutely delightful. Lady friendship for the win!

Peggy pours out the super soldier serum because...what?

She poured out Steve's blood because he died, but she never got to bury him. It was a memorial, I thought that was pretty clear, and very much in keeping with Peggy's character.

That said in a comic, there's no way that moment isn't retconned six different times by later writers.

There's always another vial of Steve's blood.

I also don't believe for a moment that Dottie is dead.

Didn't they show Dottie's "body" missing? I looked away for a second, but there was definitely a moment where my wife cheered and began spinning a tale of how she (my wife), Dottie, and Helena from Orphan Black were going to take a road trip together, smashing the patriarchy...or something. I assumed that's what happened when I looked away.

I felt the finale was a little underwhelming, if only because of the fight between Peggy and Dottie. It came across as anti-climatic and I was hoping for a much longer fight between the two of them. Dottie completely got away, good job Sousa and the other guy. I guess they were too busy congratulating themselves on capturing the evil doc.

For a split second, I had this thought that perhaps Howard actually knew exactly where Cap had gone down and had chosen for some unknown reason not to retrieve his body and thus, the true Leviathan plan was to trick him into revealing the location. But no, it turned out they just wanted to hypnotize him into turning NYC into a city of Fireflyesque reivers.

When it showed Peggy on the bridge I blurted out, "She's pulling a Titanic!" The "burial" at sea wasn't a terrible thing, however.

It did look like they're sitting up Peggy to be in a relationship with Sousa, even though Sousa made the "Sousa's heart is breaking face."

I was thrilled by the appearance of Hydra at the end.

Angie is invited too. I love Angie and I was really, REALLY glad to see her back. Jarvis and Peggy have a lovely professional relationship that I like quite a bit but I'm glad Angie wasn't left hanging about whether Peggy was okay. Now they can sit around the drawing room eating ice cream together in their '40s pajamas. It'll be great!

Peggy pours out the super soldier serum because...what?

And let's be clear - it's not the super soldier serum. It's not directly, obviously useful - it's just a sample of Steve Rogers' blood after he's had the SSS. Various efforts have been made with past samples to reverse engineer the SSS out of it but they have failed and there's no immediate reason to believe they're going to be any more successful at it. So tossing it isn't so much removing a real resource as it is getting rid of a lotto ticket with poor odds of payoff.

That said, so what? Why not let them keep fiddling? I think the show wants to use the radio program and how it exploits Steve's memory as a demonstration of what Peggy is rejecting when she tossed the blood. In addition to the above memorial it represents, it's also her saying that this is a real person with hopes and dreams who loved and who was loved. She's helping him go to his rest rather than be a pawn via some DNA (yes yes, no DNA yet, but there's a sense that this is a Piece Of Him).

I also thought, as I watched it, "man, this is a lot of dude time." But I'm not sure what alternative they had if we're supposed to have given a damn about the other people who got screen time. Either their arcs were wrapped up before now - as the Chief's was - or they needed time to shine a little. Sousa uses his brain but is victorious with some brawn. Jarvis continues his stepping up to be a more active participant.

Stark's probably the one who it felt most annoying with because he's not been with us much. But he also spent a lot of time as a bit of a buffoon who makes bad choices. This humanized him a bit more. You could also argue that Stark has been present for most of the show via his McGuffins.

And of course the above calls for a link to this, the best of the Civil War causes.

I liked the radio bit. It was a clear echo of First Avenger, and her final conversation with Steve. Dumping the vial of blood followed from the conversation with Stark, where he admitted that Steve was great before the serum (essentially reducing the value of his input). Loved the Dottie fight - Peggy's not about drawing out a fight and getting the best of her opponent, she cuts right to winning smart.

Having Thomson taking credit with the Senator was solid - some things change, but most things don't. And putting the doc in with Zola either shows the jailers are complete idiots or an early indication that Hydra is already influencing events, even before Carter gets SHIELD going.

They did a very good job integrating this with the rest of the MCU (including AoS). As a series I was more expecting this to be about the formation of SHIELD, and I'm glad it wasn't. Save that for season two.

I liked Peggy's final speech to Sousa quite a bit, but I really wish someone would have pointed out to Howard Stark that his womanizing, sexist bullshit is exactly why Leviathan was able to cause all this damage. He's blaming himself for his inventions, when really it's more that he sees all women other than Peggy Carter as objects.

Also, Thompson's story wasn't meant to show us his human side. It was meant to show us that he's always going to be wiling to claim the glory for himself. That was a nice bit and makes a lot more sense of the fact that his prior confession was basically a war crime admission. He'll tell Peggy about it and look for sympathy, but only because he can't imagine her ever having the power or credibility to expose him. It's a rather effective portrait of a misogynist, who is unfortunately receiving institutional support.

Also, Zola!

It was weird that the main villain is a foil to one of the secondary characters. It is like if the bad guy turned out to be a revenant of one of the soldiers Thompson shot.

I just realized, I'm not exactly sure what year the show is. The program that produced Dottie predates Ivchenko right? He is just some cog in the Leviathan machine?

I thought this was a solid episode if slightly anticlimactic from an action perspective. The Dottie/Peggy fight was a bit underwhelming to me, if only because we've seen some really great fights and this was between the two biggest badasses on the show. That fight followed by Peggy talking Stark down just felt... thin.

I'm glad to hear people are talking about more seasons. I'll continue to watch the heck out of this.

Finally watched this last night (through a red haze of a migraine, no less) and while I enjoyed it, it felt very underwhelming me as a season finale. A really great show centred on a more than capable woman and it seemed like they nearly forgot about her. The Peggy/Dottie showdown was pretty much summed up by Dottie saying she thought Peggy would be more formidable than this.

I mean, I always like seeing Dominic Cooper playing Howard Stark, but got real tired of the hypnotic doctor's schtick (though I did laugh at Sousa wearing earplugs) and how Angie's presence felt sort of like a tacked on afterthought.

I have no qualms about the scene where she says goodbye to a Piece of Steve a second time (though pouring out the blood into the river was just ewww) or how she told Sousa she doesn't need accolades. I will totally watch again next year if it gets renewed.

One detail of the episode got me wondering... the V-E parade. Was there a V-E Day parade in New York in 1946? I can't find mention of one online, although there was a Victory parade in January. And if there was a big parade, then why did they have to wrack their brains to come up with some big target?
posted by GhostintheMachine at 9:14 AM on February 26, 2015

Also, it probably would have been cost prohibitive, but the climax would have benefited from crosscutting with the actual parade. The stakes would be established better and we wouldn't be stuck with a couple of CG planes against the background of the city.
posted by brundlefly at 9:53 AM on February 26, 2015

I was pretty underwhelmed, but I realized that I had fallen out of love with Peggy, if not the show, after episode 6. Still, even a mediocre episode of Agent Carter is pretty good compared to a number of the other shows I'm theoretically watching. It's in the "watch this week" still, but no longer in the "must be unspoiled" category.

I would definitely tune in for another 8 episodes next year even at the level of the finale.

Yeah, it was little stuff like this that bugged me about the episode. A lot of the characters seemed to get stupid, for strictly plot reasons.

Clearly they should do another season, to see if they could do better.
