Now, that’s how you win a game. Walkoff granny. Nice.

Good lord that was an ending.

I'm in Japan so I was watching it via the ABEMA livestream. Viewership started at 640,000 in the 1st inning and it hit over 5 million by the end of the game.

First walk-off grand slam in World Series history!

Again, for the record, I'm a Red Sox fan who lives in LA. I have a hard time imagining a situation in which I would ever root for NY.

I will absolutely always root for this sort of outcome. "look! Victory! Ooooooh, sorry, the jaws!"

I signed up to TNT Sports in the UK to watch this. That was some excellent sportsball. Is it normal for the home crowd to boo the visitors as they're introduced or is that specific to the Yankees?
posted by Molesome at 7:31 AM on October 26

Booing the visiting team might depend on the local fan base - Dodger fans boo the Padres when they're introduced, Manny Machado in particular. I have to imagine Phillie fans are experts at it.

Even just a GS is pretty rare - there have only been 22 now in the World Series, this was the first one ever hit after the 8th inning.

I know with how tight the game was, you don't want to give the bottom of the Dodger order something to hit (their #9 batter was the NLCS MVP), but goddam you have to get those guys out so you don't get into the situation the Yankees found themselves in last night. You can pitch strikes to 7-9 and maybe they'll get something, but you definitely don't want to face three former league MVPs in a row with guys on base where you have to throw strikes or you'll walk in the tying run.

I noted, when game 1 went into the 10th inning, they apparently were not playing under the new runner-on-second-base-during-extra-innings rule.

Yeah, ghost runners are a regular-season-only rule.

Is the pitch clock also? I have not been all that attentive to this postseason :/
posted by CheesesOfBrazil at 5:23 AM on October 27

No, the pitch clock is in full effect for the WS.

Ohtani suffered a partial shoulder dislocation last night, sliding into second. The report I saw seemed encouraging, saying that he still has good range of motion. I doubt we’ll see him playing again anytime soon, though (just my opinion.)

Looks like the Dodger plan on playing Ohtani in game 3.

No matter which side of this fence you're on - those were definitely a great pair of opening games and I love the mirror of both teams getting into a similar situation of having bases loaded with everything riding on the defense. It worked out for the Dodgers where it didn't for the Yankees

Well, not a shut out, but 3-0 is a might deep hole to climb out of.

Maybe they can watch some inspirational material to show them it can be done?

* I was shocked to see Ohtani playing last night. Considering the investment the Dodgers have in him, I really thought they’d rest him and not risk doing more damage to that shoulder.

* Apparently, blocking the plate is ok as long as you’re a Yankee.

* Freeman for MVP? So far, he seems the likely candidate.

* If I see another pro-Trump, anti-trans-rights ad I’m gonna throw a brick through my tv. God, they really kill the buzz of some great baseball.

Freddie Freeman has hit homers in his last five World Series games, dating back to when he made the WS with the Atlanta Braves. Crazy. Other than maybe LA's collective starting pitching (sub 2.00 era) it has to be Freddie.
posted by LostInUbe at 6:03 AM on October 29

From my understanding on the blocking the plate - it was ok since he had the ball at the time as that's in the rules. Still sucks.

And Freeman has to be the MVP so far even if Dodger's pitching is way out performing their expectations. Be curious to see how tonight's game goes as the Dodgers will basically be throwing the bullpen at the whole game.
posted by drewbage1847 at 8:23 AM on October 29

Well, these games have been games, which is what I wanted, so no complaints there. At this point, Freeman should be the MVP even if the Yankees improbably come back and win the series.

Jesus, that bit of fan interference was insane. I mean, they held his arm, pried his glove open, and knocked the ball out. WTactualF??? Only in New York (Well...ok...maybe Philly and Boston, too.)
posted by Thorzdad at 3:31 AM on October 30 [1 favorite]

WTactualF is pretty apt:

According to ESPN, the pair had discussed before what they would do if a foul ball came their way.

“We always joke about the ball in our area,” the identified fan said at a local bar after the game, per ESPN. “We’re not going to go out of our way to attack. If it’s in our area, we’re going to ‘D’ up. Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We’re willing to do this.”

Yankees fans ejected after ripping ball from Mookie Betts’ glove during Game 4 of World Series

And also (from the same story):
The fans told ESPN that stadium security said they would be allowed back to the grounds for Wednesday’s Game 5.

Both arms, it seemed like.
It looked pretty disturbing when I watched it and them using the word "attack" doesn't make it better.

They could've broken his wrist. They should've been banned for the rest of the series.
posted by kirkaracha at 10:13 AM on October 30

Actually given the level of action they took - they should be banned for life across the MLB. They'd be far from the first.

(ETA: looks like they're banned for at least Game 5 - unfortunately the Yankees actually refunded them their tickets for game 5. They should have lost that money)

I guess I'm happy for Teoscar

Great win, coming back from 0-5 to win 7-6. Using an opener to throw the close out. That’s some great, scrappy baseball.

Gotta say - did not have a 5 unearned runs 5th inning in the predictions for tonight. That missed fly ball by Judge was straight up what every little league player gets yelled at for - don't look ahead, look the ball into your glove!

So 3 really great games and 2 meh games. Overall not bad, but you know Manfred and company had to be hoping this would an epic 7 game clash of the titans.

And glad to see that Freeman was the MVP as he should have been.

I have to admit, after the Yankees took the 5-0 lead, we started channel hopping to find something else to watch and just check-in every so often. Were totally stunned when we flipped back to the game just as the fifth was ending. Incredible comeback.

The balk by the Yankees’ pitcher was the dumbest thing I’ve seen in a long while.

That 5th inning looked like Little League out there. That's got to be a hard loss to swallow. Did Judge allow more runs with that error than he drove in all series? Apparently the Yankees didn't allow reporters into the locker room for 45 minutes.

The Dodgers will be even better next year.

Unsurprisingly, my Yankees fan friends have started calling for Boone's head, but that's been a yearly chorus for a while now.

File under: professional baseball. Dodgers score FIVE runs with 2 OUTS to TIE World Series Game 5! Yankees blow a 5-0 lead.
