We just finished this. It set the stage with a none-more despicable adversary doling out none-more grim adversity, in a unique predicament. But then, we felt, it squandered our engagement too many times on implausible final laps. But it seemed to do exactly what it set out to do, so I can’t fault that, and our eyes and nerves were locked in for the most part. The thriller thrilled.

I have about 20 minutes left. I watched because I wondered how they were going to pull off the premise.

So what did you think, miss-lapin?

It seemed to Mme Hoeper and me that there was one clear, brute metaphor (or allegory?), wondering if anyone else “read” it that way.

Not sure about the allegory (something about death and not moving, or not moving on?). Generally quite good, although the "mystery drug" seems to allow for conveniently timed abilities/disabilities.

We were thinking political, essentially miss-lapin's summary above; experienced sociopaths, who are for all intents and purposes above the law, preying upon and paralyzing the vulnerable (particularly women) who are knocked back down at every effort to fight back (until a fatal flaw is discovered, so keep fighting like hell). Maybe that's too on the nose and denies this story its particularity.

I didn't really read too much into it. I found the movie ultimately disappointing. It lures viewers in with a very specific premise and then uses all kinds of tricks to get around what was promised. A lot of her success has everything to do with people around her working to help her even when she's absolutely incapable of communicating and being very sensitive to her peril. It would be a refreshing benevolent view of the world, if it wasn't obvious that these people need to intervene to move the movie along. Otherwise this would be a 20 minute movie.

I thought the performances were great. I found the writing fairly disappointing though with Wittrock being saddled with a fairly generic serial killer role. There are moments where we could get more depth and we just...don't. It all felt very surface and gimmicky to me in terms of the writing.
