When a drunk vagrant is attacked by a group of youths, he reveals impressive fighting skills. Back at the police station after the fight, they realize the man in question is connected to several crimes.

At the police station, Detective Joss Carter talks with the man, who she believes to be a vet having reentry problems. Intrigued by him, she retrieves the man's finger prints from a plastic cup and is informed by a forensic tech that he is wanted in four different countries. However, a high priced attorney arrives, to claim the man.

The next morning, the man is taken to the Queensboro Bridge and is introduced to Harold Finch. Finch addresses the man as Mr Reese, demonstrates his familiarity with Mr Reese's history and his presumed death. Finch offers Reese a new purpose in life, and a job.Reese initially rejects Finch's offer. Later Reese wakes up in his hotel room bound to the headboard listening to a woman scream. When he breaks through, Finch reveals this is a set up. The woman he heard was murdered in this room several years before. They were too late to save her, but not others like her.

Reese is given his first POI an attorney named Hanson. While following her, Finch observes the testimony of Detective Fusco.

During a walk with Finch, Reese learns that when the World Trade Center was attacked, Finch was working at a lucrative job. Following the attacks, Finch was hired to design a Machine that would detect possible terrorist activities. Since the Machine was programmed to prevent the next 9/11, any other crimes detected were deemed "irrelevant," and were erased nightly. In time Finch realizes this was a mistake, and he builds a back-door that enabled him to access the list of the "irrelevant" crimes. By communicating with the Machine, Finch is given a list of only the Social Security numbers of people involved in the future crimes. Those numbers become the POIs.

While observing a clandestine meeting, Reese realizes Hansen isn't a victim, but a perpetrator. He's knocked unconscious by Fusco who starts to drive him to Oyster Bay, but Reese regains consciousness and escapes. But not before telling Fusco he works for him now.

Back in court, Hansen mistakenly plays a recording revealing her illegal behavior. Afterwards Reese meets Finch at the Queensboro Bridge. Finch wants him to make a decision whether to continue. Reese has only one question: why him? Finch explains the his options: the world believes both of them are dead and offers him a large sum of money to disappear. But if he stays, Finch tells him that his past will catch up to him and that they will both end up dead for real.

Throughout the episode are flashbacks to Reese's happy life with Jessica where he says he has quit the military to be with her. It is slowly revealed that the day in question is 9/11.

This is such a great pilot. It manages to do so many different things in one hour -- first, just capture and keep our attention with an exciting plot; second, effectively introduce our two damaged protagonists (and the series' two most important supporting characters, Carter and Fusco); third, establish the basic premise of the show; and fourth, introduce the flashback-driven structure by which it will parcel out so many intriguing tidbits of backstory, right up to the end.
