When they are given the Social Security number of a teenager who was killed two years ago, Reese and Finch begin to question the infallibility of The Machine. Meanwhile, Finch flashes back to The Machine's origin and how it was developed.
Carter is called to the aftermath of Reese' protecting a POI, a business man whose wife put a hit out on him.
Finch and Reese talk about why the Machine has given them the number of a "dead" girl. As her. body was never found, they surmise she must be alive. Reese is able to track the girl down to to a skating park before losing her.
Reese infiltrates Finch's "day job cover" greeting him in his cubicle. They realize that ultimately it was the girl's uncle who called in this hit of her family. With Fusco's help, Reese talks to the original killer who was contracted to kill the family who says he let the girl live as he doesn't kill kids. Reese realizes someone has been hired to finish the job.
Reese confronts the girl's uncle hoping to call off the hit, but fails and ultimately has to save them in person. In the end, the girl is re-united with her loving aunt.
Reese returns to Finch's cubicle to find it empty. We see Finch limping with a box of his belongings that he casually drops in the trash.
Throughout the episode there are flashbacks between Finch and his partner Nathan Ingram as the Machine learns and grows. Specifically Ingram is shocked that Finch is teaching the Machine to ignore "irrelevant" numbers, which will be deleted. The final shot of the episode is Finch walking by a bust of Ingram bearing his birth and death dates 1962-2010.
