Star Trek: Lower Decks: Of Gods and Angles
November 21, 2024 2:41 PM - Season 5, Episode 6 - Subscribe
What if [a demi-]God was one of us?
Memory Alpha doesn't skip radius day:
- The title would seem to be a reference to something called "Of Gods and Angels", but I'm not finding anything with that exact title; most of the stuff that's close appears to be religious/inspirational books and websites.
- The gods and goddesses that Olly is descended from are the ones mentioned (and in Apollo's case, shown) in the TOS episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?". That episode is the one that generated the well-known image of the giant green hand grabbing the Enterprise in space; it's referenced in LD's opening credits.
- Photonic beings have been referenced before, mostly in VOY.
"We got a real Ronald B. Moore over here!"
- Boimler talking to Rutherford; not sure if they meant Ronald B. or Ronald D.
Poster's Log:
Pretty good ep; once they mentioned that one of the spheres was missing along with Teen Cube, I guessed that it was a Romeo-and-Juliet-if-they-were-platonic-solids kind of thing. (Is a sphere a platonic solid?) Also interesting that demigods can join Starfleet. (But if you get one stinkin' little gene mod...)
The season arc seems to be advanced in that Boimler is trying to emulate his parallel-universe self not only in the face-fur department but also his career in some pretty specific aspects. Hmmm.
BeardWatch: not too awful at this point

I enjoyed it, but I kind of would have liked a whole episode about T'Lynn. Is Olly going to be a regular?

"Ronald B. Moore" is the holodeck's listing for the Comic in TNG's "Outrageous Okona". While that's, in itself, a reference to the visual effects guy who created the look of the holodeck, I assume (from the sentence itself) that the Boimler reference is to the comic.
I liked this one. I wasn't expecting the Cube/Sphere hybrid baby to be a Ouya, but here we are.

Ronald B. Moore was a vfx supervisor on TNG, Generations, Voy, and Ent.

Holy crap, hanov3r, that is a really deep cut.

Yeah, I twigged the Romeo & Juliet thing almost immediately. But this episode really need a James T. Kirk monologue with some "Eplebnista" in it to resolve the Cubes v. Spheres conflict.
Somewhere I read someone complaining about not much screen time for Dr. T'Ana this season, but she is best in small doses and this episode gave her plenty of attention.

Also, I wanted to link to Jessie Gender After Dark's YT review of this episode; they're a major fan of the show and the franchise.

Tawny Newsome joined Adam and Ben on "Greatest Trek" for their review of the previous episode, and spoke (vaguely of course) about the upcoming live-action Trek comedy series she is co-creating. All the Olly stuff here felt verrrry like a backdoor pilot in that light.
Biggest laugh for us was probably "They don't like that ten has a zero in it; it's...too round." This has been a solid season for Ransom!

I mean, that's LD's stock in trade, isn't it? I'm still waiting for Adam's weird guitar from "The Way to Eden" to show up.

It is weird that it is nearing the final episode of the final season and Captain Freeman is still defaulting to "we have to cover this up?"

I just had to post, this one exchange between Boimler and T'Ana still has me giggling
Boimler: I just, um, flipped on down here to see if I could shadow you. I've always wanted to learn medical stuff!T'Ana: No. Fuck off.

I guess this episode follows hard on the last, because Boimler's beard has barely changed.
Sean Ferrick and Jesse Gender are part of the episode watch in this house. Like Jesse, I read Ryan North's Choose Your Own Adventure comic STLD: Warp This Way and was struck that not only does Apollo's kind made an appearance in both, but they each give T'Ana some prominence at the same time.
Solid 3/5 episode. I like that Boimler's B-plot resulted in no lessons learned. The main plot was kind of predictable, and they missed an opportunity for misdirection by having Olly bring up the plot of Journey to Babel (or near enough) in a dismissible way. Still, I really liked that Olly didn't turn out to be Mariner Jr.
Rewatches are going to be kind of squicky once you know what that mess really was.
about fitting a square peg in a round hole?

T'Ana did the people's elbow on Boimler, which reminded me of Kendrick Lamar because of this Josh Johnson routine.

You can tell by the slightly thicker bezel.
It's red!
Oh, yeah.

Its quite amazing to me that they somehow managed to make you hear the actual voice actors when you're reading the comic. How did they do that?
