He plows his rental BMW into the back of a truck hard enough to make a sizable dent in the truck's bumper, but the airbag doesn't go off? The rental company isn't instantly alerted of the crash?

NOT fair, TV Hannibal is funny and even cinema Hannibal has a lot of personality.

There are no white hats in this story, so you’re supposed to empathize with almost everyone to some extent while also seeing their inhumanity in service of getting their respective jobs done. I can’t see this having a straightforward ending with the good guys winning or losing.
