With Finch back in the Library, Reese returns to field work, only to face a POI who steadfastly eludes his attempts to protect her.

Reese, who has taken on Root as his research project, protects a diplomat's daughter who turns out to be endangered by her bf who is broke and is bankrolling drug deals to make money. At one point, Reese calls Finch to be with the POI. Finch attempts to make it to the park, but it triggers his PTSD> Returning the library panting, he calls Reese who assures him that Fusco can do it for him.

Carter runs into Snow when she goes to the morgue to check out Alicia Corwin's body. Later a CIA agent questions her about her encounter with Snow.

Snow meets with Kara Stanton. He assures her that Corwin is dead and that he doesn't know who told her to send Reese and Kara to China. Kara tells Snow that he'll have to run a few more errands for her. He opens his shirt, revealing the explosive pack that she attached. Kara warns him to be careful and walks away, locking him in.

Points of Interest

This episode features the first appearance of an updated title sequence, which simplifies Finch's description of the show's premise, and includes Carter and Fusco more.

Fusco finally learns that Reese's name is John from Carter.

Bear begins his stay in the Library.

I really had a lruv/hate relationship with this series. The tech was just too real/fake with such strong wedged with a crowbar plot points, core conceit of limiting to ssn's, and why didn't they do an ep that used the non-uniqueness of ssn's, there are dupe ssn's, although by now purged, and there is location and date embedded in the numbers, but nooo it's always a contrived puzzle. Sigh, never mind.

Thank you!

This is a traditional POI of the week, and it's honestly a big come down after the first 2 eps in the season Any time you go from a Root ep to a non-Root ep, it's rough because she's just so much fun in a demented chaotic way.

Agree. The beautiful young female number-of-the-week characters in this show are sometimes very thinly written. See also the investigative journalist a couple episodes after this one.

Love that Finch falls in bromance with Bear.

core conceit of limiting to ssn's

I often consider how much better Reese and Finch's life would have been if Finch (or Nathan) had added just ONE MORE BIT of data to the numbers. (binary value, 0=victim 1=perpetrator).

Agreed that the POI-of-the-week episodes are a bit weak at this point and this is one of the weakest.

It does seem like if they have a male POI-of-the-week they will turn out to be secretly a criminal or a supergenius, but some of the female ones are just pure "damsel in distress." Root is the welcome exception to the rule of course.

It was pretty much going to be the pretty-trust-fund boyfriend from the moment he was introduced, yeah. The assassins/paparazzi twist was kinda fun though.

Also, some nice little notes of Reese quietly taking care of Finch: he doesn't press the issue when Finch is unable to come out to help, the closing "we should go for that beer now" / "does it have to be beer?" moment; and it's not at all an "oh, my apartment doesn't allow dogs" accident Bear has to live at the Library, right? that was Reese quietly setting Finch up with protection, companionship, and a reason to go outside.

there is location and date embedded in the numbers

I'm pretty sure Finch does specifically mention location of issue of one of the numbers in season 1; can't remember which episode, though.

Finch wealth-as-convenience watch:
"The consulate conducted a background check on your credentials that was strenuous."
"Let me guess, you had to buy another security company."
"And a credit bureau."
