Gilmore Girls: Take the Deviled Eggs

Rory and Lorelai attend Sherry's baby shower. Jess gets a car, which angers basically everyone. The Town Loner stages a protest.

At the town meeting, nobody can keep their attention long enough to focus on anything (aside from shouting down Taylor's plan to set up spikes to deter birds) so they gavel out early to allow Miss Patty to get to her date, but not without a warning from Taylor that the Town Loner (unnamed) is planning to stage a protest (against something or other, presumably) and that Taylor believes that he can't let this happen.

After the meeting, Luke runs into Jess working on his new (to him, decidedly not new to the world) car, and gets angry because he doesn't understand how Jess could have paid for it. After all, he's Jess's boss at the diner, and he knows he doesn't pay Jess enough to purchase even a beaten-down hooptie like this.

Rory gets an invite to Sherry's baby shower in Boston (presumably to be held within the week) and reveals that she's been in contact with Christopher again, which Lorelai has no issue with. Lorelai offers to drive her to Boston and do some shopping while Rory is at the shower.

Still confused, Luke visits Gypsy, who confirms that she sold Jess the car, but has no idea where the money came from because why would she? Taylor sits down with Rabbi Barans and Rev. Skinner,* who have offered up their shared Synagogue/Church to the Town Loner so that his protest may be carried out over Taylor's wishes. Rory and Lane walk and talk about how Mrs. Kim failed Lane in the sex-ed department, when they run into Jess and Jess's car, and Lane gets all angry at him on Rory's behalf, for owning a car after having crashed Rory's, I guess?

Lorelai drops Rory off in Boston for the shower, but Sherry catches them and insists that Lorelai attend as well. It's a "fun" but not fun affair: all of Sherry's friends are basic as hell (as is Sherry), there's karaoke (which we watch a pained Rory attempt to warble through), tiresome baby-themed games, and everyone (aside from Rory, Lorelai and Sherry) gets wildly day-drunk.

Sherry talks with Rory about how close their apartment is to Harvard, which will facilitate lots of visits next year, and with Lorelai about how "amazing" Christopher has been during the pregnancy, which sends Lorelai into a tailspin in the bathroom. Rory comes in to find Lorelai vengefully rearranging Sherry's medicine cabinet, and talks her mother down a bit.

Luke confronts Jess about where he's getting money (including asking him straight-up if he's working as a gigolo, which, you know, not in Stars Hollow, but still plausible. Jess finally admits to havinging a second job at Wal-Mart, which Luke mocks him mercilessly over.

The gals leave the shower with a tupperware full of deviled eggs foisted upon them, and when they get back to Stars Hollow, they throw the eggs at Jess's car. The next day, the loner performs his protest (Taylor has police at the ready to crack skulls) but he unfurls his banner the wrong way out, breaks it while flipping it over, and his shouts from the steeple are incomprehensible.

Jess sees the "damage" done to his car, and Rory and Lorelai shout that they can serve as each other's alibi, before walking off.

* A pair who does show up again on the show, but not enough in my opinion. The way they laugh in the face of Taylor's petty dictatorship is delightful.

Sherry's friends say that Sherry wasn't a "baby person" but that contradicts when we first met Sherry, Rory reported that Sherry had been considering single motherhood. It's a little thing but weird inconsistencies like that on this show bother me.

I do think this captures the non-fun of events like this -- there are a bunch of stupid games, people you don't know -- and while I get Sherry's logic of having Lorelai come along so Rory knows someone else ... she did not think that one through.

Sherry is always so weird to Lorelai. Or at least, Sherry has zero emotional intelligence. She's not malicious but just clueless.

I do like the devil-egging of Jess's car.

This does feel like more of a check-in with Sherry-having-Chris's-baby plot than anything really necessary. It is fun enough, though, for the most part.
