Stargate SG-1: Secrets   Rewatch
February 26, 2025 3:27 PM - Season 2, Episode 9 - Subscribe

A year after Daniel left the planet Abydos, he travels back with Teal'c to make good on the promise he made to Sha're's father. On Abydos, he learns that his wife is expecting a child by Apophis.

A year has elapsed since Skaara and Sha're were kidnapped, and the Abydonians unbury the gate in the hopes of their return with Dr. Daniel Jackson. However, he returns empty handed but finds that Sha're has returned by herself. She is pregnant and returned to Abydos to prevent Heru'ur from taking her child. She soon goes into labor. Meanwhile, Captain Samantha Carter and Colonel Jack O'Neill go to Washington D.C. to receive a medal for stopping the attack a few months back but discover that a civilian has discovered the Stargate Program.

What a weird episode, there's so much going on and I don't even remember how much of this lore is carried through into ongoing plot points. The hit and run really comes out of nowhere, and Jack is almost on the verge of suspecting the SGC and then doesn't. Plus then there's the trickery around Heru'ur and Apophis, so much happens, and it's exciting, but feels very plotted and not organic. IDK, curious to hear what others thought. It just feels pretty cramed, I didn't even talk about Carter's dad!

No one treats Share like a real person in this episode, which is vexing.

I don’t think we ever get to the bottom of the hit and run? I think it’s implied later that it was the NID, if only bc the SGC are ‘good guys’?

Share's treatment is pretty lousy in this episode. Everything is centered around Daniel's feelings, and even the wonderful return of Erick Avari as Kasuf, is tainted a bit with his own patriarchal declarations on what Share should or should not do. Take into the account that at no point is she treated as someone who was essentially raped and only regains awareness and control after she is pregnant. Big oofs.

Also a big miss on no discussion of Skara, either. Yet, it is fun to return to the planet where it all begin.

I still question why Teal'c left his staff weapon at home, when he's on full on keep Daniel safe mode before leaving.

I don't remember the ramifications of this episode, either, so I can't say if the child comes back into play at all or not or just goes on to live a happy anonymous life on Abados. I don't recall what happens to Share, either, other than well, not something pleasant.

For the most part, any SG-1 story involving covert/secret actions happening on Earth related to the Stargate, are things I almost inevitably find boring. With the exception of the time travel episode, I generally am not a big fan of earth side storylines, either. The show not only is more enjoyable in SGC and off world, but it feels different because we're not shooting around Vancouver in a way that is supposed to resemble somewhere on Earth - does that make sense?

Lots of ramifications about all of this, Atreides, but if you don’t remember I am not going to spoil it your rewatch.

What I felt after watching this previous episode (which I thought was the immediate previous one? but it's not what the "previous episode" link goes to) and this one is that SG1 and even the recurring characters of SGC are the much more real family of people who demonstrably care about one another, while the people like Share, Skara, and so forth have had no time to establish themselves as real important people to SG1 and to us. So the bad things that happened to Share were never particularly affecting to me.

The show definitely leans heavily into relying on connections to those characters built in the original film or how the SG-1 team members respond to them.

(Thanks janell, at least I'll appreciate going through the ride again!)

What I felt after watching this previous episode (which I thought was the immediate previous one? but it's not what the "previous episode" link goes to)

FF considers Rewatch and First Watch (and presumably posts that are neither) as separate threads so first time watchers don't click on previous / next episode and suddenly have themselves spoiled unexpectedly. It's fussy, to be sure. I assume the same is true for Books Included and Show Only, but I've never run around the GoT or WoT threads enough to be certain.

And yeah, I always sort of wondered if Sha're and Skaara had some kind of licensing issues from the movie so they didn't really dig in to them that much. On the other hand it's not like Drey'auc and Rya'c fared any better and they were wholly original to the show. I mean, I think the writers tried a little more than the Trek writers did with Worf's son Alexander, but it always felt like even Cassandra got treated better and she was a tertiary or quaternary character at best. On the other hand Dr. Frasier adopted her and she played a big part in Carter's life, sooo.

(On the other other hand, like, it felt like we got a lot of time with Pete Shanahan, and that always felt a little like Peter DeLuise stacking the deck.)

Well I think the show is giving guidance on how to think about characters by how it treats them in universe. Important enough and they get to stay on Earth, otherwise it's off to another 'safe' world to help them be protected.
