I'm going to start answering my cell with "drezdn residence... drezdn speaking."

"My parents insisted that all the children learn British. I didn't speak a word of American until college, brah."

The little inexplicable gags are neato; her banana cellphone ringing last ep, and Sonia's hat in this one.

The close captioning translated the lyrics for the Vietnamese Friends theme... It was something like "So you're an adult and no one told you you shouldn't complain..."

I need to go buy a hat with a brim that goes all the way around now.

The worst part is that it matches the meter. I will never be able to hear that song the right way again.

I am loving the guest appearances in this show. Amy Sedaris makes me so, so happy.

"Come on, let's get you the hell out of my house."

Are the racial stereotypes on the verge of ruining the show for anyone else? I understand what they're trying to do, but I'm getting the same vibes from the Dong character that maxsparber explained in the thread about episode 3 with Jacqueline's Native American family. They seem to want to lean on the stereotypes for jokes but then write their way out of it by making the characters more than the stereotypes. So why bother with the stereotypes in the first place? This shit is really starting to get in the way of enjoying what otherwise has the makings of an outstanding comedy.

Ok, on rewatch, I think this episode contained most of my favorite gags:

"Steve Harwell is back on tour as the lead singer of Smash Mouth. He's not gonna learn English that way!"

"I'm doing this new workout where I carry furniture up and down stairs. My trainer is an Israeli guy who owns a truck... Wait a minute. It's a moving company."

""The Pick Six Institute for Lottery Advancement, a Division of the CIA"

"Your prenuptial agreement requires that you be represented by a worser lawyer than your husband. He gets my brother, David. David's so cool. And he's, like, really fast.

I love how Kimmy came out to Jacqueline about the bunker.

As a math moron, though, I thought her figuring out compound interest was way too soon (and perhaps overly optimistic).

I rather enjoyed the idea that she has juuust enough facility with the math to get the idea of it without actually being good at it.

I also thought it showed that Dong was a good tutor, but that the material they were working with was a little skewed towards Lottery concepts rather than the basic arithmetic one would use for, say, calculating correct change.

"I'll give you some true mathematics. The Olsen twins, they're four people. Think about it."
...
"Of course. It took two of them to play one baby on the Full House. So if we see two of them now, there must be four."

This one was for people like me, who have since been corrected (and again [Google books preview]):
"And before you say anything, yes, I know my name isn't really Frankenwolf, I'm just a creature created by Dr. Frankenwolf.Give it a break, nerds."

I wonder if they actually filmed at Times Scare cause of course there's a real horror novelty venue in Times Square

My favorite lines:
"Like in bunkbeds?"
"Cool, you're a werewolf - like in the Bible!"
"Gosh wants you to leave, so does his son Jeez."
"If you could do it for me while I watch, that would be so thank you"
"Do not go in there!" "Where, outside?"
"Boyfriend is the name of my loneliness therapy dog."
"So M minus B equals 11?"
"Our racehorse was so ugly!"
"Are we in trouble cop-icer?"
"And a temporary tattoo that says: You're Grape!"

So why bother with the stereotypes in the first place?

Because the ways that Dong transcends those stereotypes (especially in later episodes) are particularly effective at building his character.

Similarly, Kimmy can relate with the ways that Dong gets stereotyped and typecast within the show. He's also trying to live in a world that doesn't really understand him. He's arguably got more in common with Kimmy than anybody else on the show -- even the other mole women.

So, yeah. I'm not sure that I agree with the backlash against the show, especially when considering it as a whole.
