The AV Club recapper gave this episode a lot of praise, but, I really wasn't feeling it. I was never a fan of the way the writers turned Carter into Reese's love interest at the very last minute, so to have Taraji P. Henson back for an episode and have her spend most of it wallowing in Reese's despair just irked me.

Yeah, that was a terrible way to close her arc.

I really liked this episode; a really meta reveal what kind of person Mr. Reese really is.

My take the last two seasons was the Caviezel wanted out and was just phoning it in. This ep kinda made the previous phoney (seeming?) acting really pay off.

BS happy ending, though.

They didn't. The kiss was an ad lib by Caviezel. The fact it made it into the final episode would have been the director's decision.

But the way Caviezel acted so protective of Carter earlier in the show hinted strongly that something was up - from his side, at least.

I thought this episode dealt with the whole "Carter is Reese's love interest" thing really well, actually, by finally making it clear that most of their 'relationship' existed entirely in his head and nowhere else. Of course I always thought it fit Reese's character to be more romantically interested in her once she's dying/dead and there's no risk of him actually having to open up to her. Pining over women he can't be with is much more inside his comfort zone than having an actual relationship with an actual living person.

I loved the look on Fusco's face when he & Root came out from behind the screen after 'questioning' Carlo

The ad lib wouldn't have come up if the script hadn't led them there. And, as far as I know TV directors don't get final cut, they get first cut and then the executive producers get final cut, so, if they didn't want Reese/Carter to be a thing, they could have made other editing choices. But they wanted it.

Good point.

That really was a masterful twist.

It's always been fun to have Root show up in whatever guise she is currently using, but her appearance in a wedding dress and running shoes was the best yet, and is not likely to be topped.

I'm on the fence about this. I am really tired of the "character who is dying being visited by dead character who helps keep them alive" trope. But yes the reveal that most of the Carter/Reese love interest was something Reese constructed after her death was important and fit into the season pretty well at this point.
