Creep (2014)

When a videographer answers a Craigslist ad for a one-day job in a remote mountain town, he finds his client is not at all what he initially seems. Trailer

This is yet another selection in FanFare's oldest movie club, the MeFi Horror Club. Want to pick the next movie for Horror Club? Drop me a MeMail and you can be up next. Guidelines here.

--------------------

At 77 minutes, Creep is barely feature length but makes it work as a short, unsettling jab. The horror comes from Mark Duplass' successful invoking of the smiling but dead behind the eyes manipulative stalker ...creep. All his little tactics, jumping the intimacy gun, touching, "just kidding!" and "it was a joke!" are all ...creepily true to life as Things Shitty Men Do To Woman, but turned up and constant. (and employed against a man). I have no idea why it's called a horror-comedy, I was cringing the entire time and had one flashback to an online modeling gig that nearly went wrong.

The Decider! "Atypical found footage movie"

The Dissolve!

The AV Club! "More admirable then enjoyable"

This movie so creeped me out I had to stop watching half way through and start again the next day.

So much of it is so true to life with Creepy Shit Creepy Guys Say Trying To Sound Normal that I had FLASHBACKS.

SKIN CRWALING. Seriously.

I am actually afraid to watch this. I couldn't get through the frigging cable guy which is supposed to be an actual comedy, so I don't know. I'm going to try tonight but I'm not looking forward to it.

I did see the comedy in this, to an extent...There's a certain amiable glee that Duplass is bringing to his character that helped me laugh at the situation, albeit very uncomfortably, in the early scenes anyway. After his bizarre sexual assault story, I was done laughing and was more in shock wondering what the hell could be coming next.

Well I thought that was a good idea to watch this before bed. Not so much. Eep.

WHY WOULD YOU GO TO THE LAKE? WHY? WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?

Not really comedic, but effective otherwise.

WHY WOULD YOU GO TO THE LAKE? WHY? WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?

This second biggest failing in this movie is that Aaron went to the lake. The first biggest failing is the one "Joseph" pointed out--if you are going to go to the lake, why not stand with the lake behind you, scanning around you for danger? That was an unbelievable level of stupidity in a movie that I otherwise liked a lot because of Duplass's performance. There is a lot of good stuff here, and I'm glad I made time for it, but I think the ending could use a re-write.
