The Amazing Race: A Little Too Much Beefcake
September 26, 2015 9:09 AM - Season 27, Episode 1 - Subscribe

11 teams begin a race around the world in Venice Beach (California) and end up in Rio at the end of the first leg. One team is eliminated.

This episode features 11 new pairs with classic strategies (including snark, flirting, and of course, being naturally super-awesome and better than everyone else), a water bike race before they even leave the state of California, soccer/volleyball mashups, a broken water bicycle, opportunities for 3 advantages (a single berth on the first flight out, a fast forward, and the traditional first leg first prize of express pass (tweaked a bit)), “not so good” wind, the return of the fitbit sponsorship, a cranky taxi driver, Phil's panama hat, individual changing tents you wear, the vagaries of flight timeliness, multiple teams defined by their jobs, snap judgements, a late-game Civilization V wonder, helicopters, mosaic slide tables, scenic bikinis, the emergence of the first major fear of heights, sad-sacking, back-biting, passive aggressive team work, and Phil showing up to put the last place team out of assorted miseries.

You know you're out of the race when Phil comes to you.

I'm disappointed that I don't have any strong feelings about any of the teams yet. Usually in the first episode there's at least someone I can't stand or someone I feel sorry for. Not there yet.

Except maybe the dentist/doctor combo. Why do teams with dentists always kind of piss me off? I don't think I have anything against dentists IRL.

I could have developed a healthy dislike of the TMZ girls, but ...

There are some teams that don't even feel distinctive yet, much less dis/likable.

That said, I did like that the first episode challenges were challenging. I do hope the challenges this year will have some complexity.
