MeFi Horror Club: Turbo Kid

Let's get weird, MeFi Horror. The critic's fave/emerging cult hit Turbo Kid is a dystopian sci-fi/comedy/gorefest. It's a bloody, but affectionate movie to kids' movies of yore that has as much love for BMX Bandits as it does for Mad Max. Discussion goes live, Friday, February 5th.

Set in a post apocalyptic year of 1997, this retro-futuristic and nostalgic tribute to 80's action-adventure films follows an orphaned teenager who goes on an adventure to save his female-robot companion from the hands of an evil warlord who controls the only water supply.
If this trailer doesn't make you want to see the movie, I do not understand you at all.

Streaming on Netflix, various digital rental options.

Such a weird movie for something that feels so familiar -- it's equal parts Road Warrior, '80s teen coming of age film, and Takashi Miike. Does it work? I'm not sure! But it's fun and I'm looking forward to the conversation about it. An interesting point of comparison might be House of the Devil, which performs a similar trick of mirroring films from approximately the same era -- but very different films, and (I think) to a very different effect.

This is a really fun film. One point of possible discussion? The manic pixie dream girl is a literal OBJECT.

I made it about fifteen minutes into the movie and got bored. All the 1980s signifiers were funny for a few minutes but quickly felt too precious for me. At heart, I guess I like my dystopias gritty, not zany.

So is this basically Kung Fury for Mad Max?

I don't want to encourage discussing the movie here instead of waiting for the proper FF thread. But nah, it's a lot better than Kung Fury. There are characters in it and stuff.

It's BMX Bandits meets Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome meets Hobo with a Shotgun meets Cherry 2000 meets Solarbabies with a grindhouse aesthetic.

It's fun!
