Although everyone should be training for the upcoming Welter's Tournament, the students are each dealing with a personal distraction that keeps them from staying focused.
Poor cancer puppy!

From a continuity standpoint, Quentin's rant about being able to summon a BLACK HOLE (whut!) but not cure cancer with magic is 100% logical to me -- but wouldn't Penny be able to transport his father to any cancer center in the world? Couldn't they use magic to pay the dad's medical bills?
I feel like the cancer storyline is a red herring, but I just don't know.
Agreed that the cancer puppy was the cutest critter ever, but I did laugh hysterically when Quentin accidentally insta-killed him.

Well, his father seems pretty compos mentis, and he declined treatment because he didn't want to end up with brain damage. Quentin's options are magically fixing him or choosing to override his stated wishes; the first one failed pretty hard, and I don't think he wants to do the second.
I'd initially thought the cancer was a ploy by Julia to get Q out of Brakebills and feeding her magic, but I guess she's not quite that ruthless.

Am I the only person who thinks this is a Buffy reference? In one ep I believe Xander remarks that a character looks like he has "Cancer of the puppy." That's the first thing I thought when I heard that.

Cancer puppy made me think of Bart Simpson's failure to turn a frog into a prince. "Every moment I live is agony." 150 year is a really long life for a puppy, who is apparently kept in a tiny carrier.
