I love Sherlock. I love superheroes.

Yet this episode was flat for me, and it set a new record for the number of words I could decipher coming out of Miller's mouth...

I did love Sherlock's "I was bitten by a radioactive detective" line, and the “Pushed over a waterfall locked in the embrace of his nemesis” reference to Reichenbach Falls. But that line about Joan knowing about comics because her brother was a geek was beyond irritating -- I don't read comics anymore, but I've got 6 longboxes full of them stored under my bed from my teenage-to-20s comic-book-reading years, there's no reason to make Joan a comics-fan-by-proxy.

While I wouldn't nominate it for a "best of" list, I enjoyed this episode. Several great wisecracks, culminating in the Reichenbach Falls reference.

Just this minute starting watching this. I'm curious when this episode was produced - the name of the bakery is Blackstar. A nod to Bowie?

Very likely. The episode with the Chinese gangs/face masks ("Who Is That Masked Man") was filmed the week of Dec. 7, and each episode takes about 7-8 days to film, IIRC.

Nope, contrary to the comment from a writer that "The Blackstar Bakery may have been named for Bowie by lovely graphics team," the scene is a minor variation on the very real Black Star Bakery (also on Yelp).

But that commentary from the writer provided insight into the other comic book deaths ("buried deep underground, made microscopic, impersonated by an alien and-- my particular favorite demise-- pushed over a waterfall, locked in the embrace of his nemesis"): Captain America; Superman; The Wasp; Skrull victims and… Sherlock Holmes!

1) That's a fascinating link, thanks

2) I think the writer (of the episode) may have misspoken slightly. They didn't invent the Black Star Bakery for the episode, but they almost certainly used it as a Bowie tribute.

All I could think when they first mentioned The Midnight Ranger was '... what Ranges at Midnight!'
