The Flight of the Phoenix (1965)

After a plane crash in the Sahara, one of the survivors says he's an airplane designer and they can make a flyable plane from the wreckage.

NYTimes hated it: A certain amount of unintelligent and irrational behavior may be assumed in a group of people confronted with a dire emergency. But when a movie about a group of people in a survival situation persists not only in having them behave unreasonably but also in failing to infuse their behavior and the situation with plausibility, then the movie stands in peril of simply not being believed.

I watched the 2004 remake last week on TV, somewhat disinterestedly, and having seen the original, the 1965 version was significantly better in terms of drama and acting. Even Kruger made a better Dorfmann.

However I'll need to watch it again to rejudge.

Thanks for posting this, MoonOrb. I had not previously heard of it and had no idea it existed. It entertained me tonight. And, to the NYTimes: "Get over it. It's a movie that is fictional."
