A lot of problems with society in general these days is people don't think because they have someone else to do that for them. For instance, I'm shocked at the number of opinion-givers newspapers here employ.
I mean, once you start giving them stories of people being shot or harassed by authorities because of walking while black, driving while black, chasing pokemon while black, or in general being black while black, BLM is not some sort of black nationalism battlecry but a cry for attention of the bullshit that is part of their daily lives, people might give it a second thought and that maybe the whole "thug" rhetoric later that night is a complete load of horseshit and there's a real problem with how authorities deal with african americans. This at least with people who are more prejudiced than full-blown racist.
If you have a society that does not think, and only react to what others think, you see the rise of populists like the Orange Fella.
