Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Skyfire Cycle
December 4, 2016 6:19 PM - Season 4, Episode 8 - Subscribe

When Terry's all-time favorite fantasy author (guest star Fred Melamed) receives threats from a Sad Puppy-esque fan, Jake helps him overcome his jitters at meeting his hero to crack the case. Meanwhile: Gina launches an unstoppable charm offensive against Boyle's cousins; Amy and Rosa try to patch up a Monty Hall problem-related marital spat between Holt and Kevin. It's a nearly All-Previously-On-MeFi episode of B99!

Yeah, I'd say this is probably my favorite episode of the season so far, in terms of juggling its A/B/C plots and addressing the characters while still getting the laughs. This episode gave us lesser-seen sides of a bunch of characters: I think sometimes the show forgets that Terry enjoys nerdy intellectual stuff, or that Gina has a genuine knack for persuading people, or that Holt and Kevin are an actual married couple who bone, so it's really satisfying to me when those sides are (deliberately?) foregrounded.

As a public service, here's a boil-down that might help you grok: According to the puzzle, Monty Hall knows what's behind the doors, he opens a second door every time, and that second door is always a goat.

I was expecting the story to end with Amy challenging Holt to put his money where his mouth is, running a bunch of trials at $20 a pop and cleaning up--to her horror. But if the key is "Rosa operating on Batman's level," I'm okay with that too.

It took us an hour to get through this ep cause we kept needing to rewind the jokes and see them again.

I'd love it if they decided to release the full 40-minute Holt explosion as a DVD extra.

I buy the DVDs anyway, but for that I'd buy them twice.

It took us that long because we had to keep pausing to argue about the Monty Hall problem. (If you thought two know-it-all gay men arguing about this was fun, imagine 2 know-it-all gay men who've heard about it before and a third who typically believes us about such things but refused to do so on this occasion. So much probability knowledge learned through yelling at my house last week.)

I specifically fired up B99 on my DVR for Monty Hall problem goodness. Having Holt yell BOONNNNNE! was just bonus. Also, sliding into the elevator.

My favorite way of cracking the Monty Hall problem: instead of 3 doors, imagine 100. You pick one door, and then Monty opens 98 doors all containing goats. Do you keep the door you picked or do you switch to the one he left closed?
