Project Runway: Descending into Good and Evil
September 15, 2017 9:57 AM - Season 16, Episode 5 - Subscribe

Drawing inspiration from the hit film “Descendants 2,” the designers visit Lyndhurst Castle and are tasked with creating a look that represents “Good” or “Evil.” Most of the results are angelic, but as always, the devil is in the details.

Designers get $300 and ~two whole days to create an evening look representing either good or evil, even better, the twins are separated. Unfortunately it just means they have to run further and faster to consult each other every 30 seconds.

In a surprising twist, Margarita gets the tearful phone home edit but ends up being safe.
Dove Cameron and China Anne McClain guest judge.

Final looks at the Lifetime website.

EW recap

Top three: Michael, Kenya, Brandon; Brandon wins
Bottom three: Samantha, Aaron, Claire ("I'm not going to grovel"); Aaron goes home

I was hoping the twin would also go home. She isn't half as talented as her sister, imo.

Brandon has a very definitive point of view, but I'm not in love with it.

The thing Aaron made has to go into the PR Hall of Fame as one of the worst things ever made on the show, and that's really saying something.

Michael's evil queen look was amazing! I wish he'd won again. And at this point, you know the only reason Claire is still there is for drama. Uck.

From the preview, it looks like next week might be the cheating scandal week.

If I were Aaron, I would have hidden when it came time for the runway. Props to him for keeping his head high to the bitter, bitter end.

And, just this last week I realized that although we've probably never met, Samantha and I used to be in overlapping friend circles in the Twin Cities years ago. So I guess I'll cheer for her, even though her dress was kind of dismal.

The only reason Claire is still there is Aaron's was so terrible. That's the worst thing in recent PR memory. I'm sure there was something worse in an early season, but nothing's coming to mind. I'm also not big on Brandon's shtick, but it works for him.

Brandon's schtick is being unexpected (except the judges expect him to make another uneven shirt dress ... so he's not completely unexpected?), where the other dresses dresses, and even the pants suit, were "expected" forms. In other words, I think he gets bonus points for uniqueness, which is probably refreshing if you live and breathe fashion, and his details are immaculate.

That said, I really didn't dig his overall look. Parts were great, but as a whole? More conceptual fashion, and way too pastel, for my tastes. I'm happy his brother was safe, because I LOVE THEIR BROTHERHOOD!

The twins are still annoying and the worst of millennials - confident where they should be humble, or at least reflective in the face of criticism. And here's Entertainment Weekly's exclusive preview of "a cheating scandal" from back in August before the show had started.

Shawn looked surprised--and maybe disappointed?--that her sister was safe after all the "one or more of you will be going home" hints from Heidi. There were also a few shots of Shawn being annoyed with Claire in the workroom--maybe a rift between them is a source of drama they'll mine next week, instead of the sisters jointly annoying all the others.

I liked the base fabric (a deliberately ugly maroon and green print) that Samantha chose for her evil dress but she really flubbed the design. Her outfits so far have had very intricate piecing and I think this time she dove right into the details before considering the overall concept. That flounce at the bottom just screamed last minute addition.

Brandon is a star. Designer of boxy, layered men's wear tasked with creating a princess gown and he does it within his aesthetic. He's got a good eye for fabric; was that striped fabric silk twill? Because it draped beautifully in the back.

Aaron, no surprises there. I really really hope, that since the FW finale show has already been taped, that he wasn't one of the decoy collections because that would be a waste of cloth.

The twins are insufferable but they're such caricatures of insufferable reality show contestants I don't take them seriously. Unless someone I like has a bad week and gets aufed while they sail through.

Brandon is such an interesting fellow! Definitely has both skills and ideas. I thought Michael won the challenge as Brandon's did not suggest "good" or whatever - certainly not as well as Michael's suggested evil and so beautifully. AND it would have been cool to win with that model (who other designers have not dressed very well).

So happy to see Kenya (I keep calling her Kendra dangit) on top once again. Margarita, Batani and Kentaro did nice work. Shawn's had some nice elements - but her sister's was terrible. If she were not one of the twins I do believe she would have gone home.

I did not understand or appreciate Amy's cape and pink dress, but from the reactions of others perhaps it needs to be seen in person. Was sad to see Samantha have such a rough time and I hope she bounces back like Kenya did.

I agree the friendship between Brandon and Kentaro is so great!

Claire's reactions to criticism are so frustrating, and it seems like a pity, too - at least some of the feedback she's getting might be useful. Even if it's on the umpteenth shitty movie promotion tie-in.

I kept dying inside at Heidi's reactions and wishing someone would talk to her about minstrelsy. She needs to find a way to project how young and with-it she is without going into a pantomime of PoC reaction gifs.

I, too, was impressed with how well Aaron held it together in the face of having created one of the worst looks in Project Runway history. Like Dove (who I'm obsessed with), I thought it looked like streamer paper on the model's chest.

Kenya is my fav! She has a great story and obviously great talent. Brandon is cool, too- not always into his looks but he has a strong vision and execution is always on point.
