Movie: Katalin Varga
[TRAILER] Peter Strickland was well into his 30's and drifting from one soul-destroying job to another. His uncle died and left him a small inheritance. Instead of buying say, a studio flat in Bracknell, Strickland took his £28,000 to Transylvania where he would, over just 17 days, produce and direct a feature film in a country he was not from, in a language he did not speak. Katalin Varga drew instant praise at the Berlin Film Festival. Part meditative folk tale, part domestic drama, part searing film noir, the drama tells the story of a young mother in a remote village who is cast out when her husband learns he is not her son's father. The film launched the career of an acclaimed writer-director who would go on to make such films as In Fabric and Berberian Sound Studio. [more inside]

Movie: Twilight
[TRAILER] I keep threatening to post Twilight and now I am. Thing is: this isn't the one with the sparkly vampires. This is Szürkület, the 1990 Hungarian crime film by Béla Tarr's friend & collaborator, György Fehér. The plot: after discovering the murdered body of a young girl deep in a mountainous forest, a hardened homicide detective pushes himself to increasingly obsessive ends in his quest to catch the serial killer -- known only as "The Giant" -- responsible for the crime.
