Initial lineup thoughts :

The USA shouldn't have too much in the way of changes. It's just another question of which of our four starting midfielders will fit into three midfield spots. I wouldn't mind seeing Lavelle dropped, and rolling with Mewis/Horan/Ertz.

England has a few more questions, but they mostly relate to where to play Lucy Bronze. She started at d-mid against us in Nashville - my memory fails me but I think she was a right-side pivot in a 4-2-3-1? - so we'll see if they go there again. If they do, her replacement will be Rachel Daly, and we should expect Rapinoe to attack mercilessly. Daly does have speed and fresh legs, so that battle isn't a foregone conclusion.

I might expect Stanway or Moore over Keira Walsh also, depending on which would be up to the task of fighting the rugged US midfield. Given her performance against Amel Majri, O'Hara might also be a weak spot against speed and fresh legs, so Beth Mead might appear in that spot.

I'm not entirely sure of any tactics that we should use against England. My main thought is to continue to mark Kirby out of the game - we may not be able to control the wings, especially Parris and Bronze, but we should make sure that they can't go down the middle. If we get that and a strong one-on-one showing from our outside backs again, we should be in great shape. On attack, just do our thing, and hope Millie Bright continues to be off her game.
posted by suckerpunch at 9:39 AM on July 2, 2019 [1 favorite]

Er, that should be, Beth Mead might start in place of Toni Duggan to attack O'Hara from the outset. If she doesn't start, she'll be subbed in to do the same, and will be dangerous regardless.

I love all the Rapinoe love, but there are 10 other women on the field when she’s playing, and they all have to do their jobs to win the game.

Bronze in midfield, Daly, Mead.

Press over Rapinoe makes sense if you want to cut inside, or just generally play central. Thing is, do you really wanna do that?

It seemed England were a bit nervous at the start and were overrun by America's pressing game and superior fitness. The fitness and experience meant when it came to the crunch America simply executed better than England. America stepped up a gear from the last round and England couldn't respond.

The tournament itself has been amazing though. I'm hoping the huge audiences mean that more people will watch the Women's Premier League in the UK and it will snowball.

fullerine: Alex Morgan still makes Neymar look fucking stoic though

Alex Morgan, like Neymar, gets fouled a lot, often very roughly. I don’t know why she should pretend it doesn’t hurt to have studs driven into her shin.
posted by Kattullus at 3:41 PM on July 2, 2019 [7 favorites]

To be fair, the American strategy to close out the game appeared to be, "let Alex Morgan dribble into the corner and get fouled until the whistle blows." I don't think she was overdoing it in the first hour of play (nor indeed in most games).

I dunno. One of my most treasured memories from last year’s World Cup was watching a replay in a bar, and a regular who doesn’t follow football looked up at the screen where Neymar was rolling around, and said “is he breakdancing?”

Wow, really! That's...different. Is there not-sexist explanation for this? The last I heard re: FIFA's usual approach to alcohol, they were trampling over local laws to ensure their sponsors could sell at the games.

The story I heard (from this piece) is that FIFA didn’t line up a beer sponsor, and only sponsors are allowed to sell inside the stadium. (The concessions in Rennes and Le Havre were identical, and you could only pay with cash or Visa, no other cards accepted.)
posted by asterix at 9:13 AM on July 3, 2019 [2 favorites]

And here I was assuming it was for some wholesome reason, like to keep people from getting into drunken fights.

There was beer yesterday, but it was non alcoholic and only a single stand outside the stadium was selling it.
posted by egregious theorem at 10:13 AM on July 3, 2019 [1 favorite]

I did wonder whether that might have played a role. Same on sponsors in Valenciennes and Reims.

They were selling non-alcoholic beer at WWC 2019. They were also pushing a lot of plastic. You had to take a capless plastic 500ml bottle and a hard plastic beaker if you wanted a drink. Given they were messaging importance of hydration in 32 degree temps it was pretty shit in terms of environmental impact.

egregious theorem: they've had non-alcoholic beer at all the games I believe (definitely all the ones I went to). It really is a standard menu; the only difference between Le Havre and Rennes was that you could also get a galette saucisse in Rennes.

It appears that the Swedish team has made statements that Asllani's more or less OK. CT and MRI didn’t show anything worrying, which is a relief.

Asllani’s fit to start today’s game, which I will miss, sadly. On the one hand, third place playoffs reek of regrets and broken dreams, but they have a tendency to be wildly entertaining.

I'm rooting for Sweden today!

Does our discussion continue in this thread?

A new thread might be more appropriate. Otherwise we’ll be at like 700 comments by the end of tomorrow.

I think a new thread for the final is best. That’s when people go looking for a thread.

Commentators just said that there have been 31 VAR reviews and 27 of them overturned calls on the field. Ugh.

Argh. All the bars in my neighborhood are closed; looks like I’ll come in at ~30 minute mark. Grrr.

Boo. It's off to a good start for now! Though one of England's defenders is down at the moment.

And Asllani just scored!! So happy for her!

Oook, and Jakobsson just sent one that was saved by the post. England looking pretty hapless at the moment.

I just posted a thread for the third place match, thanks TwoStride for the nudge.
